I would love to know how this spec differs from the MB 229.3 spec! Maybe they sacrificed wear requirments for gas milage requirments.
if you click and download the pdf file in G-Man II's first post in the upper page we ll find the spec's of almost all the german makers and their requirements.quote:

Yes, but this spec is for a service life that is roughly 30% longer than 229.3.quote:

Cam wear for the 229.3 spec is 3.0 max (not sure of the units) and it is 5.0 max for the 229.5 spec.

I happen to use Mobil 1 that meets the most stringent OEM spec in the world? Why would I use a considerably more expensive, hard to find oil if the manufacture can't afford to get their oil certified or is it that they don't want to and hope that the PR guys can talk a good line? I don't like to play shell games with my engines. Marketing and pr guys can tell you anything but, in the real world I just look at the data ie spects as usefull.
Absolutely! I'm continually amazed at the cavalier attitude of paying $30,000+ (and usually considerably more) for a car arguably considered at the pinnacle of current engineering practices and then playing motor oil "spin-the-bottle" even though the manufacturer has undertaken at considerable expense to codify what protects best.
The above exchange says it all. Now those of you who are "really" in touch with your "true" selves know full well that you'll never go the distance on a manufacturers' recommended OCI. Only (I would estimate) about 10% of you do now. Somehow the majority, and for no good apparent reason, "reason" that you all have mostly severe duty circumstances. In reality most of you 'exceed the need' when it comes to these matters. Me? Guiltyquote:

Thanks Yannis! I took a look and what I suspected is right!quote:

The fuel economy is 1.0% min for the 229.3 spec and 1.8% min for the 229.5 spec.
Therefore, I want to avoid any oil that will meet the MB 229.5 specs!!

Right, but the wear maximum was increased 66.6%!quote:
Humm Some oils meet both 229.3 and 229.5 Mobil ow 40 for example.quote:
