Mobil 1 oil filters

Having never ran one, but I do own a Mobil1 filter, Id say they are only second to Royal Purple. Also, I think they are leaps and bounds ahead of the Fram Ultra if performance is your game.
 
I like the RP oil filter that I purchased. But I don't think that the RP oil filters are way better than the Fram Ultra. I think they both are great filters who are neck and neck in terms of performance.

LoL ... "leaps and bounds ahead"? I don't think so. Per the Amsoil efficiency graph the Ea has worse efficiency than the Ultra, so how can it be "leaps and bounds ahead".

And actually, if you go to Mobil 1 website, they don't even list the efficiency anymore. Usually, when a company stops listing the efficiency in terms of "xx% @ yy microns", then they are trying to hide an efficiency that looks pretty bad compared to others on the market.
 
I don't know how good they are in most applications, but I ran M1 filters a couple times early in my Jeep's life and the anti-drain back valves did not work. The engine made some bad noise for a couple seconds at startup. Jeep forums went wild telling people to avoid the M1 filter on the JK. I switched to a Motorcraft and the problem stopped. I now run Fram Ultra 3600, which works perfectly and is a little oversized, so it holds a little more oil, which is good on my 3.8 liter oil burner.

OK, well thanks. I couldn't find anything directly related to oil filters in your first link but maybe I just missed it. And the second link I've seen before, it's interesting but not directly related to the ISO tests. It could have meaning but maybe not, no one can tell. The third link is just deconstruction photos and he duly notes that it is not a "test" nor does it have correlation to any standardized test. And that fourth one, well that's the usual chart that's referenced from Amsoil. Guess I was looking for something a bit more directly related to actual filtering efficiency numbers.

This was years ago..... so no I don't have the emails from mobil1.com. I remember being surprised M1 filters do not remove dirt as well as standard filters, and then regretted buying a whole box of them.
 
You don't know what you're talking about as usual. If you did you would have saw the M1 filter off my current boss's Kia Rio with 13k on it
 
Just because a filter substrate is backed by wire mesh, so that it lasts 25,000 miles, does not mean it has a good filtering ability.

Although it's been years since I last checked, I recall FRAM having 99% efficiency at 20 microns, but M1 only 95% at that size.
 
Wire is there since synthetic media lacks structural integrity - Mobil filter is combined material and is rigid. Your efficiency comments don't line up with publications ...
 
M1s are very similar to the Bosch Distance Plus-good construction, decent blended media, silicone ADBV-but VERY overpriced (normally) for what you get. The Bosch DP D3520 for my Dodge is actually heavier than the RP or Stratapore for the same application-but weight isn't the only answer.
 
I have been using Mobil 1 filters for years, with an occasional Fram Ultra mixed in. I was always very happy with both of them. On a recent visit to AAP I noticed they were selling for $14.99, which is a lot of wood. I'd always get them for less, but even so those deals seem to be harder to come by. Once my stash is gone I will be using Fram Ultra filters which I can get for under $5 shipped to the house. I don't mind paying up a bit for the Mobil 1 filter quality, but their price is now too rich for my blood.
 
Same - but if for whatever reason you might want a thicker/stronger and well coated filter - M1's are stout (RP too) ...

Good point. You're right they are built like a brick s-house. That isn't a concern in my applications though.
 
Okay I called Fram & Mobil whose respective techs told me the Fram Ultra filter is:
99% at 25
98% at 20
50% at 10 (aka nominal)

Mobil only listed 25 microns, which they rate at 97%. So it's worse. (Like I said.) If you don't believe me you could pick-up your phone & call them yourself.

For comparison the PureOne's Old Design (circa 2010) had 70% at 10 micron, and 50% at 5 (so technically better than all of them). I don't have numbers for the current design. I guess I need to call Purolator next.
