Is it possible that the Shell nitrogen fuel additive would cause nitration abs to increase on a UOA for an MPI IC engine?

If it does it could be harmful so the answer should be "no". Shell knows better. This new gas formula is supposed to clean the valves and is just in time for DI engines where it may not see the valves at all until it's burned which means it doesn't help much. Shell claims this new gas is the answer because they have suspended other fuel research.

I though nitration was only normal in a natural gas engine.

This nitration stuff gets started in a reduced O2 environment and is a precursor to acid formation when H2O is present which could be any time you start a cold engine and take a short trip.

This is why your engine oil has additives to slow the process down until the next oil change.

Yes. The active ingredient is polyetheramine, which contains a C-N bond. If PEA is present in the oil due to blow-by or fuel dilution it will read as nitration, increasing the value above what would be seen if fuel or additives containing PEA had not been used.

Interesting. Definitely sounds like something that should be on the map for anyone interpreting a UOA.
