Radar detector under $100

I have had excellent service out of Whistler brand.Have had them since the old "Whistler 3" days.

Options like slowing down and driving the speed limit? It is tempting to buy/use a radar detector because several times when I was stopped for speeding over the years, I was going down a long hill and gaining speed without really realizing I was going too fast. I'm not one to ride the brakes down a long hill, and then there's the instinct to use momentum to go up the next hill and not waste energy and wear on the brakes. That and speed traps at these strategically unfair locations make me want to go buy one again too.

Have you read any reviews? I have been relying on intelligently written reviews of products more and more lately.

Well, there is a lot to read about as far as radars go, something like oil, it's not as simple. I hate to say it, but radar detectors under $100 are not worth it. You might as well not speed. I had gone through cobras all the way to Valentine (HWY driving), why?
Economy wise, one speeding ticket will cost you on the cheap side $125 plus the rise in your insurance premiums, god forbid you get another one!
I researched radar detectors quiet a lot, biggest competitors are Bell/Escort vs Valentine. Obviously each one has their ups and downs.
Let me tell you how my V1 saved me double its cost within 1 week. I drove from Houston to Glacier NP and back, so little over 5k miles. I rarely get hits in Houston; though, this past week cops stepped up quiet a lot. On my way to Dallas I got hit 3 times, but I could have not even been speeding because of construction and ridiculous traffic. From Dallas going through Oklahoma and Colorado I saved myself 3 tickets, at least. However, the most surprising save was in one part of Glacier NP, there was a park ranger; they hit people with radar quiet a lot! Going to the sun road, they drive with constant on, so only an idiot with any radar detector gets hit, unless it's crazy off axis, from around a corner. OK back to my save. I read on the radar forums, a must, that you get a faint blip on my V1 seconds before either Instant On or Quick Trigger. I was going down hill and heard a faint blip, slowed down quickly because I wasn't going much over, and got hit a second later, ranger had no chance. Ranger sees me muting the detector, obviously [censored], turns around and hits me again, or so I thought. He got some black blazer. Coincidentally, I met the driver of that black blazer at a gas station, and asked him how much he got him for, he said well over $200.

Yes, initial investment into a radar detector is very high, but it is worth it, if you happen to speed like simply going down hill.
Few things:
1)Radar detectors are illegal only in Virginia and Washington D.C.
That's it!
2) Obviously military bases forbid them too, but it's clearly posted.
3) Radar detector detects radars, it helps you see them.
4) Never run ahead of a pack because no matter how good your radar detector is, you have a high chance of getting a ticket.
5) Follow a rabbit, a car ahead of you that is most likely to get hit first.
6) Some states allow defense against lasers like blinder.
7) Read a lot on the radar forums.
8) Get Waze app(it's free waze.com), it's basically essential for driving on the interstate.

One website, forgot which one, has a map with info what states and counties use which frequencies, so you could chose the radar detector better. Obviously, you can register and ask a question, just like here, about which one to get based on your driving and location.

Also, I bought Cheetah c50 . A device that tells you your actual speed by GPS, and has updated database of red light cameras, common speed traps, 5 second red lights etc. It is far superior to apps like trapster.

Long ago I bought a XRS-9340 Cobra off the shelf. I started using it all the time whenever I traveled to various states and it would go off during certain stretches of roads all the time whenever there were no police present. I bought another brand of radar detector and it did not signal while I was driving the same roads that there was something there. Well, to make a story short, states do have radar along the roads where the state "thinks" that traffic is going faster than the speed limit. That way, the police can come along and target those areas for revenue. Just my opinion based upon the experiences I have had on those roads.

I would trust but verify a current Cobra radar detectors' ability to warn you of possible radar, and laser guns being used on the roads.

I don't use my radar/laser detectors nor laser jammers/disablers/destroyers in my daily driving anymore. Haven't needed it since 2009 with my Slo-Mo Nissan Frontier being a "police magnet."

I've read the cheap ones aren't worth it, and you can't beat laser. Had a cop friend tell that she would ticket rather than warn if she saw a detector in the car. Stick with the pack, know the area, and don't push the limit when away from home.

I've been using radar detector for 2 decades now (along PNW highways), and I can tell you one thing: most of the sub-100 radar are not worth buying, citing poor, if not inconsistent performance.

I've also been a big fan of cobra detectors all these time: generally ok performance, while some models may excel in certain areas: like my XRS-9730 (my 3rd radar in 2 decades time): excellent high band detection, incl. laser.... hexk! I got beamed a few times in WA state close to, or around Danny way on I-5! my detector screamed out a weird noise (different band detection based on differnt sonic warnings), it wasn't when I turned around and looked at the screen before I realised I was lasered! But then again: I wasn't over the speed limit to begin with (just follow along the traffic, minding my own biz) but I was impressed.

(*another time I was lasered from behind also, and my XRS-9730 detected it with it's rear-facing detection*)

my car is not particularly interesting/fast, so I can "blend" in fairly nicely w/o sticking out like a sore thumb (police magnet)

Q.

Well, the first Cobra I posted for $66 is rated at 4 out of 5 stars, while a $500 Valentine One is only at 4.2 stars, that's not enough difference for me to spend almost $450 more.

Same here...

My V1 is 18 years old, been dropped many times. It's just now starting to flake out. Sub-$100 detectors cost more than a quality detector over time.

The V1 is $399, is it really that much better? I have been hearing about it for years.

Not sure why folks think they are above the law and should be able to speed.

Going with the pack, as has been mentioned, even by folks with detectors, is key.

I drive on enough roads where towns drop the limit 40 mpg in like 100 feet, to know the games that are played. I know they do stuff like that just for revenue... But to blatantly want to ignore and be over the law, is just as bad, IMO.

Thanks for the laughs!

Just to let you know, this guy calls himself Radar Roy and he sells Bell/Escorts and bashes on Valentine constantly, you have probably seen one of his many websites. There is not one Cobra made that could outperform V1, ever. V1 has a bit of a learning curve though; however, V1 is the only one that has forward and rear facing antennae, and so far has the best Laser detection. I had escorts before my V1, and they were great, but between the arrows and now the Bluetooth module, I don't see myself switching anytime soon.
