Merkava Mark IV Battle Tank

"Skirting" on a tank to make an incoming shell explode early so it won't penetrate the main armor is a common defensive feature. It was widespread in WWII. Not sure why anyone would make fun of that.

Merkavas leave the factory with chain skirting in place to protect the shot trap in the rear. I don’t think anyone makes fun of that.

Looks like it gives good shade too! Look how the gunner in the first tank can comfortably sit in the sun's direction vs the commander in the second tank.
