I have read through a bunch of threads and there is a lot of great info on this forum. Even with this abundance of info I wanted to make a post to get some direct advice. Firstly regarding the choice of oil. I am going to run full synthetic 10w-30. Generally speaking, with all my other small engines (Predator, Brigs, Toro and KOHLER) I usually just run what ever synthetic 10w-30 is on sale Castrol GTX, mobile one, etc. due to this particular machine being a much larger investment I want to cross my T’s and dot my I‘s so to speak. This is the same reason I have begun installing hour meters on new equipment also. I have never had problems doing this and always change the filter with the oil change. For the Honda I may just pick one oil and stick with it.
In comes Honda. The owner manual states to change the oil at 20 hrs or the first month. Just the oil (10w-30 SJ or later/equivalent). The filter change does not occur, according to the manual, at 200 hrs. The badboy manual states 8 hours. I was going to split the difference and change at 12 hours but then I started reading.
It seems that many of you change oil at 5 hours or so to get the shavings and crud out of the system. This makes sense to do and is what I plan do do. I am almost at the 5 hour mark now after getting it this week. The manual says to change oil filter every 200 hrs. if I’m changing oil it seems only wise to change the filter also. Unless I’m missing sometime important. Would you advise changing the filter also? It currently has a blue Honda filter on it.
Also, contrary to what I’ve always been told regarding non ethanol fuel (to use it u=in your small engines) Honda recommends a pump octane rating of 86 or higher.
Thank you.
