A critical calculation that everybody seems to be missing with the price spread between reg, mid, and super octanes is the percentage. "It used to be $0.15 between grades, but now it's more" is not unexpected. Lets say gas was $1.00, $1.15, and $1.30 per gallon in 1988. That seems pretty close to what I remember when I started driving. Midgrade is 15% and super is 30% over regular. Today, regular is $2.59. If the percentage spread is the same, then mid is $2.97 and super is $3.37. As prices rise, the price in dollars will spread even further given the same percentage difference.

The only thing I want to add is that it is WELL past time to do away with the 9/10 of a cent at the end of all gas prices. Vestigial garbage.
