Driving With Hand On The Shift Lever???

I had a fellow HPDE instructor tell of a student who gave a point-by with his left hand while he rested his right hand on the shift lever- all while going down the front straight at @100 mph...

I daily drive a manual transmission with no power steering. I do not rest my hand on the gear stick. With very minimal force I can move the stick into a position in most gears where there is tension on the syncro. I could easily see an issue with resting your hand on the gear knob in my particular car.
