When did Hyundai/Kia become so expensive?

LOL... no, not flamed. Just laughed at.

I haven't driven a recent Hyundai, but we test-drove an Elantra in 2009 and it was much better specced than the Civic we finally bought, for a few thousand dollars less, and got pretty good reviews. I would probably have picked it over the Civic, but my girlfriend couldn't see out of the back very well.

So I'm not surprised they can increase prices if they've improved quality to that level. I accidentally drove a Kia for a couple of days in the 90s, and it was the worst car I've ever driven.

Those Kias were Mazda designs.

Very poorly executed Mazda designs.

The Sephia was bad. Same chassis as a similar year Ford Escort. The Escort drove better but had that awful CVH engine. The Protege' is again the same chassis and rides and handles better than the Sephia and Escort.

I cannot overstate how bad the Sephia was. Handles like a wet sponge. Shifter is like a broom handle in a bucket Same engine as the Protege' and MX-5 Miata....somehow slower and less responsive Brakes? Yeah....it had them. They met the basic definition of brakes. The interior? It looked good at the dealership. After one summer, the vinyl around the defroster dash vents would curl up, darken, and become brittle. On a hot/humid day the carpet would start to roll up and separate itself from the floor.

The Sportage was better....a little better anyway. It was at least a body on frame real 4X4 with a hard to screw up Mazda FE series engine. It still managed to be slow, get poor fuel eco

Those Kias had nothing in common with the Hyundai based Kias.

Yep, it does seem like right around then, Hyundai and Kia began ramping up content and the price. People keep paying, so the cycle continues.

Oh yeah, that's one of their newer designs...LOL. Yup, every time I get out of the grocery store, looking for my 2010-2014 design Sonata, I accidentally walk over to a 2009 Accord. Ooops! Lol. Not to mention the new 2015 model year Sonata has now copied the ohhhh, let's see...'78 El Dorado?

Everyone can find something to back their argument on world-wide web... any argument. I'm not here to change your mind though, so carry on.

I think more fully-contented compacts and subcompacts especially were becoming the market norm in the 2009-2012 period. In the case of Hyundai, the Accent went from a sub-10K stripper that was advertised as (insert your locale here )'s cheapest car to a fully competitive and much more fully featured car with a $2000 price increase. Hyundai / Kia vehicles are value plays and having more content / features for more but less ( than competitors ) falls right in line with the market trend that was happening in that period.

Not sure of the price but i know it's in the $60,000 range.. I compared that to the mercedes and Hyundai got it by a mile

Maybe if you're an 11 year old who thinks random features taken from real luxury cars makes it cool.

On that note, the 429HP seems to be gauged using Shetland Ponies, as real life performance of this engine does not meet what would be delivered by an engine making that kind of power. We've discussed this in the past with respect to the Genesis.

The Equus has a 0-60 of 6.4 seconds. This is a 4,600lb sedan. My 4,100lb sedan with a mere 400HP has a 0-60 of 4.8 seconds.
The Equus has a 1/4 mile time of 14.8 @ 98Mph. My '87 Mustang with 225HP was faster than that! The M5 runs mid to high 12's at 112-115Mph.

Source for the Equus specs here:
http://www.motorweek.org/reviews/road_tests/2014_hyundai_equus

So either the Germans are using Clydesdale's and the Koreans are using Shetlands or Hyundai has the world's least efficient drivetrain and is seriously over-rating their 5.0L V8.

And just in case the M5 was an unfair comparison:
http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/bmw-750i-short-take-road-test

2006 BMW 750i, with 360HP and 360 lb-ft of torque. 0-60 of 5.4 seconds and a 1/4 mile of 13.9 @ 103Mph. Curb weight of 4,506lbs.

While 0-60 isn't everything, I do agree that is a bit surprising. Wife's Q5 has aerodynamics of a brick, weighs 4,400 lbs and with 272 HP it still manages to do 0-60 in 5.5 sec.

No argument there. Heck, even our 265 HP, 2.0T Santa fe does it in 6.5 with a top end of 151 mph...

Despite the excellent reviews and decent looks my wife and I simply would never buy one.

Maybe a badge snobs but I remember them as absolute junk piles.

In 2011 when I was purchasing a new compact, a new Elantra was pricier than a Cruze. The Elantra got eliminated for sub-par fuel economy, handling, and I couldn't fit my work gear through the trunk opening.

I'd buy a Hyundai/Kia product if it had the steak to go with the sizzle. Maybe the 2015's are better than the cars of 4 years ago.

I have been shopping around and have seen some less than inspiring things about some brands/badges that used to be known for solid and dependable cars. I think with the current economic state these last 6 years or so...the bean counters are really neutering some great brands.

As mentioned previously,, I was at a Kia dealership on Friday looking at the Mini Vans. I saw the Kia K900 on the lot stickered at $60,000.00. I asked the salesmen if they sold many and he said they don't. I believe that's the Kia version of the Equus.

It looks like an Optima and it's called a Canine-hundred. Who's going to buy that? VW learned that from the Phaeton that looked like a Jetta.

Or all the Lincolns that were just tarted up Fords...or the Jaguar that was built on a Taurus platform.

True..it just goes to show that the Koreans don't understand the luxury market. My friend who bought a Genesis instead of the Mercedes commented on how the dealership buying experience harkened back to the days of shady salesmen, shady sales managers and finance managers. Clearly they try to sell a $50,000.00 Genesis the same way they try to play with the numbers on a $12,000.00 Accent.

But all the existing Hyundai/Kia dealers gripped about building separate facilities to sell the luxury models with separate sales forces.. So you got the equivalent of the modern days horse thieves selling luxury Hyundai and Kias.
