When did Hyundai/Kia become so expensive?

Most of the newer Hyundai models are actually worth the price.

The Veloster isn't worth it, and you don't see many sold. Why pay that price when you can get a VW GTI?

The Genesis coupe hasn't caught on, and I'm not sure why. I called the 2.0T model "The Nissan Silvia that we never got."

Agree on all counts.

I love my Hundais. The '08 Accent is the most reliable car I've ever had. The Genesis Coupe is getting expensive though. They want to upmarket it. I have the 2010 track 2L turbo. Only year they made that version. Best bang for the buck for sure.

Unfortunately they dropped the 2L turbo motor. Rumor has it a twin turbo V6 or the 5L V8 is in store for 2016 but also with a +$45k price.

The Accent they messed up when going to the DI motor I feel. The 1.6L '08 motor has plenty of power and great gas mileage.

Is the new Genesis much improved over the original one? I've seen the original at an auto show a few years back, and while it had a lot of gadgets, the overall feel of interior materials and fit and finish were just not there compared to other luxury makes.

Yes, the new Genesis is considerably better than the original. However, if you're looking for the hand-hewn burled walnut trim pieces or an E Class type interior it probably won't pass muster although it's also improved. The switch gear works well and is nicely set up versus some luxury makes I've seen that "intellectually and ergonomically confuse" rather than just doing their job. To me, that aspect can mean as much if not more than than the total quality of the interior. Gadget cars can become a pain in the butt pretty quickly when you find yourself yelling "Just do it!!" like you would at a computer.

you can say what you want to, but I just bought a 2015 sonata that is my 4th one
and I never had any trouble with them I also have a 2009 santafe and haven't had
any trouble yet had an accent no trouble also a 2001 xg 300 had a little trouble
with it but the dealer took care of it.i was going to trade my santafe but I do not
like the newer ones.

If only it was 500lbs lighter and was powered by the legendary SR20.

Agree on all counts.

Edit:
Agree on counts except for Veloster Turbo. I rather like that car. I owned a NA Veloster MT and enjoyed it for what it was as well.

If you look in an interior of the new 2015 Kia Sedona mini van-they are VERY LUXURIOUS compared to both Honda and Toyota. I know I have looked.

I have a friend who was looking at the Mercedes "C" class. He could buy any car in that price range he wanted. He finally decided on the Hyundai Genesis.

Hyundai and Kia have come a long way.

Actually - the Kia won this recent comparison.

We just reviewed all the vans at the auto show. The Sedona is still a half generation or more behind the others. The basic models are as expensive as those from the other manufacturers. The $40k+ models do have more knickknacks like footrests for the middle captains chairs, but you could see that things like the two tone leather was much worse for wear as compared to the nicer vans from the other manufacturers.

If they at least had MPGs as high as the Honda (given that the Sedona should be a gen ahead of the current odyssey), it would be worth a consideration But the low end models aren't nicely appointed and get worse mpgs than the other manufacturers. No thanks.

My only comment would be that I tend to not base my vehicle purchases on if a particular model is a half generation behind x model. That's not really a defense of Kia as much as my own realization that a half generation behind for one buyer might be the sweet spot for another buyer based on an older configuration, particular feature(s) no longer available, etc. that, along with what they'll give for a trade, ultimately seals the deal. It's surprising how much my own experience and results consistently differ from both professional and consumer reviews and I think that can be particularly true where mini-vans, pick ups, and certain niche vehicles are concerned.

We compared minivans recently. The Odyssey and Sedona were our top choices. The Sedona edged out the Honda after driving dynamics were considered. I know that sounds strange to some. It kept understeer at bay (better) and was more responsive on the whole.

Not a big HP jump over the 3.8L NA V6 they have now but I'm sure BTR can get another 100 hp with a tune.

The 2LTurbo got a 75 hp increase just from a tune.

Just because a turbo engine has similar HP to another NA engine, doesn't mean the turbo engine is without an advantage. You end up with lots of low end torque and a flat torque curve.

Just compare a MKIV GTI/Jetta 1.8T 180HP with an Acura Integra VTEC as an example.

People have short memories and have no appreciation for the driving dynamics of cars.
When one can buy an Accord or Camry for Hyudai/Kia money, only the uninformed would be shopping their local Hyundia/Kia dealer.
The warranty has little meaning given how brutal Hyundai (they also own the Kia brand) is reported to be in applying it.
When did Hyundai start pricing their products at mainstream levels?
When they figured out that they could.
