VW admits to rigging diesel emissions

So I don't quite understand how the fuel mileage would go down in "cheat mode" if that is supposed to give lower emissions. I would think that lower emissions would mean the engine is running leaner and more efficient, and therefore give better fuel mileage ... ??

@ZeeOSix The guy in the video mentions the key words "we believe" quite a few times. So this cannot be taken as a serious basis for argument in its current mode.

Emissions is a broad term.

The typical list of emissions is:

CO -- Carbon Monoxide
CO2 -- Carbon Dioxide
HC -- Hydrocarbons
NOx -- Oxides of Nitrogen
H20 -- Water

Perfect combustion has a hydrocarbon fuel and produces H20 and CO2.

But we know perfect combustion doesn't exist. So you get things such as unburnt fuel, HC, NOx because the atmosphere isn't simply oxygen, but about 78% Nitrogen, IIRC, and CO.

If you tune to have few if any HC, you'll get better fuel economy because you are not sending unburnt fuel out the exhaust to be handled by the catalyst.

The other side of that coin is if you have a lean fuel mixture, while it provides good fuel economy, you create NOx at higher combustion chamber temperatures.

So if you are running a lean mixture to minimize unburnt HC (and soot for that matter) you are producing more NOx.

It was NOx where VW was not meeting the standard. So perhaps they were fattening up the fuel mixture and manipulating the EGR to pass the emissions test, but would lean it out and introduce less EGR to give better drivability and fuel economy.

That's one way you can have more of some emissions and still have better fuel economy.

The key is to realize that emissions is not one monolithic substance, but rather a collection of compounds that each have individual federal standards.

Its getting to the point where many corporations are being run by crooks. Theres a lot of unethical stuff going on everywhere. The big corporations bully the general public into paying unexplained fees, loan shark level interest, crazy fees on banking and such.

But curmudgeons think the government is unfair to corporations. There's going to be French revolution style uprising eventually where these guys lose their figurative heads.

turtlevette,

Big corporations keep the American economy running..... they also keep the value of your 401K going up over the years. I got 30 years at a big corporation you mentioned being bad and corrupt.

Why you so anti big business ?

What are we talking about. What about the gm ignition switch coverup? We could go on all day. Its unethical business practice and just plain unethical decision making and it goes on every day. And nobody stands up to it anymore. We have millions of sheeple scared for their crummy job willing to let people die.

Thank God for whistleblowers. Thank God for people with backbone.

Do the right thing, [censored] the cost.

All has been sacrificed at the alter of short term profits, you can thank the uniquely American scourge of the stock market for that.
It wasn't always that way. Also you have rank and file that would have actually made a physical fight against corporate tyranny that now actually vote and conduct themselves in a way that actually goes against their own interests! It's shocking really the change in just thirty years or so. These same idiots worship Faux News and accept what they say as valid.

Worst thing that ever happened to the civilized western world was the evil idea of globalism.

It might be the wine talking, but I agree with you!

At some point it became OK to push the gray areas of ethics to make a few more bucks and merely proclaim, its just business, we're just businessmen. Innovators we're replaced with mba's in top management, and they're trained to think that way in business school. Just squeeze the nuts out of everything. Did y'all see the new passenger jet seating plan they have in store for us? Pack them bodies in.

NOx can be decreased with delayed injection timing, but at some point it will start to increase other emissions and decrease MPG. Lower peak temperature = PM and HC, less expansion = higher exhaust temp and lower efficiency.

I'm not sure if diesel has a future in small vehicles with these new emission limits. I like Mazda's ideas though:

And then there is this Miller style engine concept from Finland:

Every big company in the USA has a ton of lobbyists in Washington making sure the 'correct' decisions are made.

Nothing you can do because lobbyists are pumping big $$$ into the pockets of elected folks on both sides.

Every once in awhile the candidates talk about getting rid of lobbyist, then they do nothing and hope we forget about it. And we do. Were minions.

That's why the Raven players don't speak to each other in the huddle.

They are not supposed to associate with known felons as part of their parole agreement....
