Currently use Castrol Edge 5W40 oil in my 2018 Hyundai 2.0 turbo.

Oil change due in late November.

Should I switch to 5W30 Mobil 1 (on hand) for winter use in NE Ohio, or stick with the 5W40? Both meet mfg spec.

Typically change oil every 4 months. Sante Fe sees mostly short trips, 5-15 min.

Thanks.

Since both are a 5w, there won't be any significant differences in starting. The operating engine temp will be close to 210 F within 15 to 20 minutes and then the engine will stay at that temp winter or summer. An air cooled engine would be a different story. No need to change in my opinion.

Just look at their pour points, and a short trip Hyundai turbo needs 40 in my opinion. Especially if you are short tripping in winter weather with DI/turbo/ Hyundai's rich fuel mapping. I will be running 0-40 Amsoil in my 2018 Kona 1.6 Turbo. I am a short tripper like you, plus I have my foot into boost a lot of the time. I sent mine in UOA and I was over 5% fuel dilution at 2,000 miles in upper midwest fall temps. We need the viscosity. Also I would run 5-30 in your Elantra. ANY GDI should be 5-30, Period.

Short trips, winter weather with an average low of 20/25 degrees and highs 35/40 ... sure why not use a 5w30 certainly would not hurt and the vehicle is spec'd for 30 or 40 anyway.
Makes sense if you ask me, chances are your oil will never hit the full hot point in the winter then it does in the summer and I see the 5/30 as a good thing for your winter driving.

Pour points:
- Castrol Edge 5W40 - 44F
- Mobil 1 5W30 - 44F

Garage.

Plus, retired. So if the temps are really cold (below 0F) I probably will not go out.

Nothing like you are used to seeing. Record cold is -20F.

Either 5W30 or 5W40 should be fine, those two grades are tested to the same cold cranking (CCS at -30C/-22F) and pumpability (MRV at -35C/-31F) specs.
Don't get too excited about pour points, the CCS and MRV tests were developed because pour point did not address the needs of an engine starting in very cold weather. You can find 10WXXs and higher with low pour points that will still not get the job done in very cold weather.

It seems that there is no overwhelming reason not stick with Castrol Edge 5W40 in the winter time.....

OP currently uses 5W40, so why change?

I guess it depends if the OP might think that thinner oils protect better at start-up

Just how much difference do you think there is between 5W40 and 5W30 when cold?
