Here is a short list I compiled for gasket and external dimensions for the most common Toyota oil filter. The reason I did this is that half the time the recommended oil filter is undersized. That's because Toyota streamlined their oil-filter models by replacing their original part numbers by a single undersized oil filter (90915-YZZF2). So, this list useful for those who are looking for a slightly bigger oil filter that would still fit or fit even better than the undersized recommendation (fit more like the original oil filter before they introduced 90915-YZZF2) and, naturally of course, perform a little better than the undersized recommendation as well.

Denso 150-1000/Toyota 90915-YZZF2
Gasket diameter: 5.5 x 6.2 mm (2.17 x 2.44 in)
W x H 6.8 x 7.2 cm (2.68 x 2.83 in)

Gasket diameter: (2.13 x 2.47 in)
W x H (2.68 x 2.90 in)

Royal Purple 10-2835

W x H (2.98 x 3.40 in)

Fram PH2951
Gasket diameter: 5.4 x 6.2 mm (2.13 x 2.42 in)
W x H 7.6 x 8.4 cm (3.02 x 3.36 in)

Fram PH3614
Gasket diameter: (2.45 x 2.76 in)
W x H (2.98 x 3.43 in)

Fram PH7575
Gasket diameter: (2.45 x 2.76 in)
W x H (2.98 x 3.43 in)

Fram PH4967
Gasket diameter: (2.19 x 2.44 in)

Many engines take the Puro 14477.

You mean Purolator L14476. It looks like Purolator L14477 is the taller version of Purolator L14476.

Purolator L14476 would be what I call the undersized replacement, which is the Toyota 90915-YZZF2 equivalent. Purolator recommends L10241 for my engine, while Toyota offers only the undersized replacement 90915-YZZF2. I don't know for sure if L10241 fits in newer Toyota engines as well. It certainly fits in my engine.

Again with "undersized"...how do you define that solely on external dimensions ?

Undersized for what ?

Size refers to external dimensions in this context, as we are not comparing oil-filter media surface area or dirt-holding capacity. It's undersized in comparison to the original OEM oil filter that came with the car (Toyota/Denso 15601-13011). Toyota later replaced it with smaller oil filters, at least in the USA. The OEM oil filters sold in Japan may be bigger.

Can size can be deceiving. One example pointed out in the past is the Purolator 14459 (3.15" dia x 2.95") visually seems to be larger than the 14610 (2.69" dia x 3.50"), but when measuring the media area the 14610 has 22% more media area. What Purolator did on the 14459 is not take full advantage of the increase in diameter and skimmed on the media inside the can.

Seems like we had this discussion recently. As Shannow may have hinted to and ZeeOSix commented on, filter capacity is what the end user should be looking for. A larger filter may hold more oil but does that really gain anything for the owner? The amount of filter media and the type should be the specs to go by.

Looks like the Denso is the same basic dimensions as the shorty 4967/14476. If looking for an upsize I'd just go with the slightly longer (~.75") 4386/14477 applications and be done with it. One member (Stig iirc) has said Toyota back spec'd to the latter for those calling for the former originally.

It's analogous to the metric thread shorty 6607/14612 to the 7317/14610/57356 upsize. Nissan specs the shorty on many vehicles where the latter will always fit, ie., never seen an application that it didn't work. Beyond the ~3/4" length increase, filter specs exactly the same.

If as noted your vehicle originally calls for the 3614/10241 size, just use it or equivalents like Wix 51348. That said, not sure you're gaining significant capacity over the 4386 size, 'imo'.

Thanks for the information.

Yes, Purolator currently recommends L10241 for 1985 Corolla. I think it used to be the even larger, substantial L22821 before the latter was discontinued and superseded by L10241.

They are recommending the tiny L14476 for most newer Corollas and they are recommending L14477 for some intermediate model years and engines.

The filter recommended for 1985 Corolla by Fram is PH2951 but the availability is limited. Perhaps it's being discontinued. PH3614 is about the same-size and very similar, the main difference being a larger gasket on PH3614, about the same gasket size as Purolator L10241. I will probably pick up a Fram Ultra XG3614 for the next oil change, which is selling for sliglty under $8 at Walmart; although, it will require some driving.

Here is a longer list:

Denso 150-1000/Toyota 90915-YZZF2

For the 1983 - 1987 Corolla, it's also worth mentioning that the discontinued Purolator L22821 (old Purolator recommendation) and the Fram recommendation PH2951 seem to be the only ones with the gaskets not near the edge.

The last three pictures are for the Toyota/Denso Thailand OEM 90915-YZZF2, Denso Thailand aftermarket 150-1000, and Toyota/GM/Denso Japan OEM 90915-10003.

For the 1985 Corolla, I decided to choose the Fram Ultra XG3614 for the next OCI.

The outer edge of the gasket of XG3614 should nicely fit on the outer edge of the flange, still a millimeter or two to the inside of the outer edge.

Regarding the height of the filter, my engine easily takes up to about a four-inch-tall oil filter. Five inches would be probably too tall and interfere with the A/C pipe or fan shroud; so, I can't use XG8A (Motorcraft FL-1A equivalent), even though its gasket should also fit. It's not to mention that I wouldn't have enough clearance to screw it on or use an oil-filter wrench. wink

However, the gasket of XG3614 is probably too large for newer-Corolla oil-filter flanges. So, it would probably only work on the 1983 - 1987 Corollas.

Here is the final list:

Code:
Denso 150-1000/Toyota 90915-YZZF2
Gasket diameter: 5.5 x 6.2 cm (2.17 x 2.44 in)
W x H 6.8 x 7.2 cm (2.68 x 2.83 in)

Royal Purple 10-2840
Gasket diameter: (2.13 x 2.47 in)
W x H (2.68 x 2.90 in)

Royal Purple 10-2835
Gasket diameter: (2.35 x 2.72 in)
W x H (2.98 x 3.40 in)

Fram PH2951 (recommended by Fram but hard-to-find)
Gasket diameter: 5.4 x 6.2 mm (2.13 x 2.42 in)
W x H 7.6 x 8.4 cm (3.02 x 3.36 in)

Fram PH3614 (easier-to-find replacement for PH2951 with larger gasket)
Gasket diameter: (2.45 x 2.76 in)
W x H (2.98 x 3.43 in)

Fram PH7575
Gasket diameter: (2.45 x 2.76 in)
W x H (2.98 x 3.43 in)

Fram PH4967
Gasket diameter: (2.19 x 2.44 in)
W x H (2.69 x 2.92 in)

Fram PH4386
Gasket diameter: (2.25 x 2.50 in)
W x H (2.69 x 3.47 in)

Fram PH8A (probably too long to fit)
Gasket diameter: (2.42 x 2.80 in)
W x H (3.80 x 5.14 in)

Bosch 3330
Gasket diameter: 6.1 x 7.0 mm (2.40 x 2.76 in)
W x H 7.4 x 8.4 cm ( 2.91 x 3.31 in)

Purolator L10241 (recommended by Purolator)
W x H (2.98 x 3.36 in)

Purolator L22821 (discontinued)
W x H (3.15 x 3.94 in)

Purolator L14476
W x H (2.69 x 2.93 in)

Purolator L14477
W x H (2.69 x 3.52 in)

Purolator L35098 (discontinued)
W x H (3.01 x 4.10 in)

Wix 51394
Gasket diameter: (2.17 x 2.48 in)
W x H (2.69 x 2.98 in)

Wix 51348
Gasket diameter: (2.43 x 2.73 in)
W x H (2.92 x 3.40 in)

Amsoil EA15K09
Gasket diameter: (2.13 x 2.47 in)
W x H (2.68 x 2.90 in)

Amsoil EA15K51
Gasket diameter: (2.39 x 2.76 in)

L22821: 86 Celica (apparently also for 83 - 87 Corolla before it was discontinued and superseded by L10241)

L14477: Some Corolla model years and engines after 88
L14476: Most Corolla model years and engines after 88

Optimal choice for 83 - 87 Corolla: Fram Ultra XG3614 (or other quality oil filters of similar size)

You need to do an in depth, full length feature study on why the recommended filters have smaller diameter gaskets. Why doesn't Fram recommend the 3614 if it doesn't matter? Or the maker, Toyota? It may have something to do with the inlet flow on the block and how the oil is directed at the filter inlet holes. Or something else. The XG4386 would be my choice for a Fram.

The oil filters currently recommended for my engine by Purolator (L10241, PL10241, and PBL10241) and Bosch (3330 and D3330, probably made by Purolator as well) have larger gaskets, too. Also, these oil filters cross-reference to Fram XG3614. Therefore, I think it's fine.

Toyota designed your 85 Corolla engine that has gone 267000 miles and still uses no oil, and they say use the smaller gasket filter. They don't recommend the 90915-yzzD1, which they also make, which is identical in size to the 3614 series. So you then conclude Purolator's application guide knows better than anyone else. That's fine. Good luck it's finally decided and over.

Thank you for your feedback. It's appreciated. You got me thinking into the outer diameter of the inlet-hole circle. This is the only remaining concern if the oil-filter gasket fully overlaps with the cylinder-block flange.

I measured these using the pictures and here are the results:

Inlet-hole-circle outer diameter:

Purolator L22821: 42 mm
Purolator L10241: 42 mm
Fram PH2951: 47 mm
Fram XG3614: 49 mm
Fram PH3614: 50 mm
Toyota 90915-YZZF2: To be measured later using the actual oil filter, estimated to be about 46 mm albeit lack of precise can-diameter info

So, as you see, Purolator L10241 has the smallest inlet-hole-circle diameter, despite having the larger gasket. Therefore, it's definitely fine, as long as the gasket fully overlaps with the flange.

The XG3614 inlet-hole circle seems to be only about 2 - 3 mm wider than the Toyota 90915-YZZF2 inlet-hole circle. Therefore, I am guessing that it won't cause any problems.

Fram Ultra XG2951 isn't available -- only the old Extended Guard X2 version is available.

I will also measure the cylinder-block oil-filter flange inner and outer diameters using a caliper before I install the oil filter for the next OCI.
