Why do you watch the Super Bowl?

When I was a kid, you got respect for taking an opponent down and taking the ball away from the other team.

Now, if you pass gas in the QB's general direction, you get kicked out of the game and exiled to Horrible Bully island. Don't get me started on this pass interference or looking crosseyed at the receiver nonsense. No more foosball for me. Flag football is for kids, not the big leagues. I'm down to baseball and pro-wrestling as 'sporting events worth watching', and one of those has had both feet out of the door for years. I gave up on pro wrestling for 10-12 years and only started watching it again during covid. It went from "this ain't ballet" to 'this really looks like synchronized swimming." But, I am giving it another try.

I love sports. I love participating in them. I even love watching sports. I will go out of my way to watch real sports, like when my kids were competing in various sports events, Soccer, Field Hockey, Ski racing, and I try to get up to Boston for the Head of the Charles each year.

The SuperBowl isn’t sports - it is obsession with celebrities, wrapped in commercialism, and pushed by hugely influential corporations.

Yuck.
I hear you I especially feel this way about my favorite sport the NHL. This is why I support local youth hockey namely 16U.

First of all, we seem to accept it takes well over $1,000 to take a family out to a game. Why?

Yesterday, I could not watch Seattle at Phila. Why can’t I? I pay nearly $200/mo for Verizon FiOS. Because it’s blacked out and only on ESPN+/Hulu. Wth?

What I truly despise is watching road games and seeing all the Phila ad logos superimposed onto the ice and dasher boards. Guess I’m a sentimental softie. I want to see Monsieur Muffler, Mr Pizza, Saputo Cheese and Molson if the Flyers are in Montreal. Not the same local ads. It’s all about the characters of the venues. So yes all corporate.

I’m not a fan of either team but I loathe the 49ers. I may watch some of it just to pull against them. The halftime show and commercials I have zero interest in.

I used to love the NFL but they have weakened the game with the constant flags and what is a catch and made IMO some very lackluster decisions over the last 5 years or so. The current Swift matter makes me throw up in my mouth. The disrespect for America accelerated the decline. Roger Goodell was/is the worst thing that happened to the NFL from my lens.

Rooting for 49er's and Purdy! Humble kid right there.

Part of me wonders if talent being increased has caused the rules to change and the game to be less enjoyable. Do we want to celebrate the elite, or reflections of ourselves? In elementary school I read about Knute Rockne and was on a Notre Dame kick.

Look at it today when QBs can rush for TD and NHL captains can lead in scoring and they also drop the gloves to fight. One could argue the skill level today exceeds 25+ years ago…but is that boring…

For me that is not the issue. The fact we have to go through so many iterations of "What is a catch?" year after year is ridiculous. The continued handicapping of defensive players has gone overboard IMO. It's like MLB juicing the ball for more home runs as they fill more seats! The cost to see a regular season game is akin to a trip to the grocery store, $$$$. The ever-increasing political nonsense is a buzzkill. Sports should be an escape from all that jazz. Just me but I want to see the best of the best play not a dissertation about their beliefs. They aren't heroes, they are grown men playing a game.

I won’t be watching it. Maybe parts and pieces as I’m sure my dad will have it on in the living room. If it was the World Series I’d be watching because that’s baseball and baseball isn’t boring to me like football. I don’t understand the game so it gets really confusing watching it for one thing but it’s also boring. I don’t care about commercials or the halftime show. If I wanted to watch commercials I’d pay for cable in my room lol because that’s all that’s on cable anymore. I’m going to try to watch SpongeBob during the Super Bowl but the Paramount Plus channel will probably be really lagging due to all the traffic so I may watch a movie instead.

The 49ers in the Super Bowl has really upped the excitement around here. Lots of Red and Gold everywhere. People who would just keep to themselves are cheering on others in 49er garb. It's alive!

Maybe we can learn to be a little friendlier and a little less judgemental?

My wife enjoys it and makes decent food. She has her rare wine and I get an after party :)

As a kid my grandfather enjoyed it and brings nice memories.

Honestly not a football fan but enjoy everything else…

I watch the halftime show. I could care less about the game and the commercials.
Same here, although I don't watch the halftime show.

I watched it in 1972 with some friends. It was more to socialize with friends than to watch the game. That was the last and only time I watched it. Most years I am unaware that it's time for the game, and rarely know what teams are playing.
