The impellers and shafts are splined press fits. I wouldn't want plastic, if I had a choice. When you sell a pump with a plastic impeller, you're saying to the customer. Its OK , the bearing or the packing will fail first.

The Aisin composite impeller pumps used as OEM on the UZ-series Lexus/Tundra/Sequoia/4Runner V8s hold up quite well. The one on my parent's Sienna was also in good shape as well when it was replaced.

Well, personally, I'd rather bury a plastic pipe underground for a few decades than copper or galvanized, you didn't say this was limited to water pumps.

Guess you don't remember all metal power tools. I do and it wasn't fun to use a buffer that weighed in at almost 20lb.
