Replace timing chain or no?

I was ale to remove the crank gear and both keys. Bought a puller and helped it with a small pet bar.

Not sure what good that'd do to remove the keys, but the manual said to do it.

I split the crank gear with a chisel when I R+R'ed the timing chain and gears on a 307. Why remove the keys? The upper gear was aluminum and very chewed up.
