For their mowers Honda says they are tested and verified on petroleum oil and to use that. But we all know "synthetic" is better.
I use what ever extra motor oil I have lieing around in the GCV 160 Honda mower I have. Since I usually use conventional Quaker State 5W/10W-30 in my car, I use that in my mower.
I had some QSGB 10W40 so I recently put that in the Honda mower. The mower has always smoked a little when first started since new but it smoked less with the 10W40.
The mower is about 12 years old and I honestly haven't even changed the oil in it every year and runs fine. Any 10W30 changed once a year should keep it in good shape for many years.
