Is BITOG just a version of social media or is it something else?

If one wants BITOG to simply be a database/ knowledge center- it will be a ghost town.

There is positively validity to that point, i know several - one pistol forum and one truck forum (actually probably more than one) that has suffered. Both of those forums have a tremendous amount of reference material but the posters for the most part are gone... Facebook groups almost killed forums completely.

However there must be a balance, i think BITOG does a reasonable job of striking a balance - one of the better that comes to mind...

I know one forum where you state something as a fact and can't support it you will get a vacation, you say "sucks" or "screw" or the proper name of a file with unmarried parents and you'll get a long vacation at best. That might be a little draconian but it does keep it very technical and accurate last time i logged in it was very slow. I know another one where pretty much anything goes except saying something derogatory about a members family or outright pornography. That might be a little lax, though in the technical areas of the forum things are still pretty accurate, and members are very helpful, in fact it is the the place where if you say you need help, someone will promptly drive 200 miles to help you or organize a cross country relay to get you what you need. It is extremely active.

So i guess what i'm saying is a lot of it is the culture that is promulgated in the community.

The vacation part is needed, and must be hard for the BITOG staff. Once lines get crossed, it is not feasible to walk it back. We all want to share things we observe, etc- but at some point things go down a hole that is not good for the BITOG members. Even some words can get BITOG suspended from Google searches..no easy thing to run a forum.

Example of a brag thread....

BINGO!

I love how people are just making up their own definitions of what social media is just so they can shoot it down and declare BITOG is not social media.
I have been a Facebook member for about two years. I heard all the negatives, I found Facebook a lifesaver when I needed a car part at the last minute, even found a much needed exact model microwave on a Sunday night. Not sure all the hate is accurate.

I've always rolled my eyes at forums that are so narrow-focused like that. Shows a lack of foresight on behalf of whoever created it. Even worse, when someone creates a forum for a specific generation of a single car model, i.e. 9th-generation Honda Civics, 2nd-generation Fusions, etc.
The auto groups (forums if you can call them than) on FB suck compared to regular internet forums. It's all one big thread that people post to without any direction or logic. You post a question and a few hours later you can't even find it since it's buried 2 pages down. Imagine if the 30 or so subforums at BITOG were combined into one single forum and then imagine how difficult it would be to navigate and keep track of everything. That's what FB Groups are like.

They have reviews for most everything they sell which is pretty much the same thing. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Cricket-...igo-Prepaid-Smartphone/640397234?athbdg=L1100
Not really.

When you post a review, you are only communicating with Walmart. There is no way for you to respond to other people's reviews and have a back-and-forth conversation. It's a one-way street. It would be like making a thread on BITOG and immediately locking it so that no one could comment.

Your lack of understanding of how to use social media sites doesn't change the definition. Never heard of notifications ? Gee, when someone replies/comments on a post on Facebook OR on this site, you get a notification. Click it and it takes you to the answers or responses. Uh-oh, another example of how forums are social media. 🤣

No it isn't, and for the size of the forum it is a small staff, they do a very good job.

We do seem the have quite the persistent recurrence of members under new user names here, at least we did on the old software, haven't noticed it as much lately maybe the newer software has better tools.

This will be my last post in this specific thread. My Wife thinks it is nutty I communicate about things on a oil forum, she doesn't get it. Makes her laugh.

Machine lubrication is important... it really is.

You're kidding right? Reviews communicate to potential buyers about the product being reviewed. And on some sites there is a reply to a review button so you can comment, question or clarify what was posted. Same as here when someone posts about this or that oil, filter or repair.
