Important tech tip for bench testing lawn mowers. Don't mow your drill bits.

Lucky I didn't catch any shrapnel. I did, in my younger days, mow a little piece of two by four on the bench. A 'shard' hit me in the leg and left a big purple and black bruise that lasted a couple weeks. Just a little 'visual/literal' reminder of what not to do. Like cleaning the carb and plug, and doing several 'housekeeping' items on a mower before checking for compression or to see if it's locked up.

I never run a mower unless it is on the ground, preferably out in the driveway.
Me too, but I've seen a lot of homeowners running their mowers on the driveway and on the street where their houses are facing and use the mower as a vacuum to round dry leaves from the ground through the mower bag

TAKE THE BLADE OFF.
It often will not start like that. Mowers that don't have a blade clutch depend on the inertia of the blade to stay running. For such mower applications, engine designers have created a lower cost lightweight flywheel which is not heavy enough by itself, because it doesn't need to be.

Always test on the floor or ground.
