I have a 2005 Toyota 4-Runner Sport Edition with the 4.7L V8 engine. I've always used Toyota oil filters but decided to use a Mobil 1 filter on this change. I looked in a few places for a Molbil 1 part number and it says use the "M1 102" filter. It is SMALLER than the Toyota filter. Is that OK? I see no leaks after running the engine for a few minutes after the change (before putting the front skid plate back on).

Should I be concerned??

Thanks for any input.

Bob

Bob,

Simple answer is yes & no.

Yes, Smaller filter may have less media (which typically translates to less holding capacity). Seal ring must be same size .

No, you don't mention OCI but most filters typically don't get fully loaded in a factory recommended OCI. The only way to really know is cut one open, then you need to know how to assess.

Particle size filtration...M1 is much better than average, don't know about Toyota OEM.

Unless there is obvious problem worry about something else.

My OCI is the typical 3000 miles.

I also use Motorcraft 5w30 syn blend ever since the first change.

Look at a M1-209 or any filter speced for a Jeep liberty. They are about the same size as toyota factory.

If you have the room like I do on my V6 taco you could use the FL-1A filter size.

The gaskets are close enough to most of the "bigger" filters out there in the 3/4-16 thread ..make that most filters. Most filters have a 2.8/2.4 gasket (hydraulic, etc.). Some have slightly smaller.

So, I'd say your limits/options depend on your room outside of the current can area in can diameter and length.

3/4-16 thread is currently the most widely used filter on the planet.

If you can physically fit a longer filter, the Wix 51516 is a nice alternative. It's about 1.4" longer; same diameter.

This one falls directly in line with the "bigger is better" philosophy Gary and I have debated at length. The Beta ratios compare thus: 51348 - 2/20 @ 21/37; 51516 - 2/20 @ 14/31.

Since the 51516 is used on a bazillion vehicles, it tends to be easy to find, and sometimes a bit less expensive (due to the economics of scale).

OTOH, with a 3k mile OCI (presuming you're changing the filter then too), just about any filter would be sufficient.

Hello Gary -

Wow, great info!

Where can I find this level of detail on other filters? Google is only so-so...
