Claymores and M134's would seem appropriate.
Yes, If you live in a state with the Castle Doctrine, you could use military weaponry to defend your property and should as far as I am concerned, the Koreans had it right in LA. If those thugs want to attack my property and my person, I would eliminate that threat with whatever deadly force was necessary. Definitely automatic weapons, and grenades, as well as shoulder launched missiles.
I would assume the Korean shop owners knew each other by reputation and knew they'd back each other up.
If I owned a liquor store and there was a CVS next to me, I would not have the same confidence.
And once I shot my first thug, then what's my exit strategy? Other thugs looking for trouble and feeling oppressed by "the man" are going to see me as "the man" and the cops will still be an hour or three out, regrouping, so the streets won't be clear.
And it would be hard to get a clean shot, if I'm behind my cash register and there's a mob coming in through my front door. Someone in the background not interested in looting my store could get shot. (This is where one would say, "if they weren't rioting..." but I'd still have my moral dilemma.)
Yeah, I root for a shop owner protecting his turf, but I wouldn't want to be that guy.
