Post Your Latest Oil Change! - 03/26/14 10:24 PM

I figured this may be fun and spur everyone to post like many do in the PCMO section and might give us some interesting oils/brews and filter combinations we motorcyclists haven't pondered yet. Feel free to give as much info as you'd like!

1986 Yamaha FZX700 Fazer: Shell Rotella 15W40, Wix 24937 Filter

2007 Yamaha FZ1: Shell Rotella 15W40, Wix 51358 Filter

So far I'm really happy with the performance of the SRT 15W40 and don't see myself trying another oil any time soon, but I might try out the HiFlo filters as I can get them REALLY cheap. Hopefully I'll get a response from them as far as their filter efficiency goes before making the change.

Nothing exciting here...

2013 BMW F700GS: I let dealer handle the last oil change which was also the first 600-mile service on the bike. They used an OEM BMW filter (not sure who makes them) and if I wanted synthetic oil (which I did), then their only option was Spectro 15w-50. Not a big fan, but I didn't feel like bringing in my own oil for this change.

Warmed up enough last weekend to remove the Mobil1 0w20 AFE, and replace it with TGMO of the same weight.

Today, it was nearly reached 30 degrees.

I should have the UOA by the end of the week, to post.

Last week I had a couple days off and it was nice out so I changed the oil in the 2006 Accord 2.4
OUT: TGMO 0w20 / Honda A02 (5 months and 3000 miles)

Seriously John... AFE is not an additive nor is it a API test... AFE is just oil can
marketing aimed at cagers who close their wallets with a torque wrench... what AFE means
to me is less internal drag and more rear wheel HP... 0W-30 Mobil 1 is my choice because
it falls within the official Honda Owners manual which requires an oil that meets or
exceeds the 10W-30 SE SF or SG ...

True to its racing intent Mr.Honda's RC45 comes stock with a close ratio gear box with a
tall first gear good for 90mph... consequently they are known to incinerate clutch
plates... but since 1998 I've been chasing my shadow down the perverted highway and have
racked up over 55K miles (not in moderation either) I've never experienced clutch slip
due my choice of 30 weight oils... what confuses owners is the fact that all wet clutches
reach a point in their service life and begin to slip... at that point the culprit is not
the oil but the mileage on the clutch...

John when you say T5 & T6 do you mean Torco???

Hey RedVic. . . do you have a lab report coming for that OCI? I'd be interested in seeing it if you do.

I have a report coming for my latest OCI. I'm thinking about a switch to Spectro 20w-40 next time around and doing a comparison. Spectro is claiming that they use PAO / Ester syns in their blend and in their full syn.

As for shifting quality / noise. . . I don't really note any difference across the OCI with Vic oil--it clunks when the oil is new and clunks when the oil is worn out! It does however, shear out of grade.

Sorry but I can't figure out to get a readable copy of the lab reports in these posts so I just copied the results along with the universal averages.

I went with the Redline 10w-40 this time so the next sample will have some of the 20w-50 mixed in with the 10w-40 as you know there is at minimum a half a quart of oil that remains in a Victory due to oil cooler. I like the specs of the Redline 10w-40.

I really like how the Redline has retained its viscosity as Victory's are known to be hard on oil with their gear box design. Factor in the air cooled V-Twin engine and it is easy to understand why a lot of oils do not retain their viscosity.

I also like the robust additive package Redline uses. Pretty much most oils will do the job, but it sure is nice to know that the Redline can withstand the pounding of a full 5,000 mile oil change interval and still maintain its rated viscosity and still have lots of its additive package protecting the engine and transmission.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

that. I used that formula in my "11 RT and am using it now on the '14 Rt. Let us

I put the FJR to sleep w/ a sump full of very old, Delvac 1 5W-40 that was idled up to check sump level only. Fresh oil, 91 octane, ethanol-free fuel, red Stabil, small amount of synthetic injector oil (very small) along w/ small amount of some Seafoam. Ran that long enough to get circulated to the injectors & then plugged in for a long, winter's nap.

1982 V45 Sabre, 23,600 miles. Had to dump a fill of Valvoline 10W40 Synthetic motorcycle oil at 600 miles due to poor shifting. I was afraid I was going to have to replace the clutch, which would have been a shock since I bought the bike new and the clutch hasn't been abused.

The poor shifting began immediately with this fill and bleeding and flushing the clutch fluid helped, but the shift quality was still bad. Wasn't fun to ride with the poor shifting, and likely caused as much dog wear as the last 10K miles on the machine.

Replaced with Castrol Actevo semi syn 10W40, reused the Fram Ultra filter after dumping it out.

No filter change, Fram FPS6607 is now on its second OCI. I change these every third oil change for a FCI of ~10K-12K miles.

With 600 miles on the VR1 so far, bike is running great. Shifts brilliantly (in fact possibly even better than the oil it replaced), and no clutch issues despite Valvoline's warning about not being recommended for wet clutch applications. Interested in seeing how well the monograde holds up in the long run.

Other oils previously run in this bike: Rotella T 15W-40, T5 15W-40, T6 5W-40, Valvoline 10W-40 dino M/C oil, Redline 10W-40, Motul 7100 10W-40.

Re: Post Your Latest Oil Change! - 06/12/17 08:16 AM

I generally don't look at motorcycle oils - the shared trans bikes get an HDEO of 15W-40 or 30, the Airhead just needs a car oil. Although I'm a bit fussy with my 20w-50, a pushrod 2 valve twin needs a bit of ZDDP.

I also don't look at Harley oil. But a HD is an aircooled 2 vavle pushrod twin...the Airhead is a 180 degree V twin. So I got some Penrite V Twin 20W-50, on sale, down from outrageously expensive to just very expensive...well, down to cheaper than Edge. Just worried about oil leaks with the POA/ester. I have a slight pushrod tube leak, I don't really want it pushed to a repair job.

'14 Yamaha V Star 250...recently bought with only 23 miles!

23-191 miles -- factory fill oil & oem filter; 191-540 miles -- 50/50 mix of Traveller 15w-40 hdeo and Shell 10w-40 pcmo & Fram CH6004 filter; 540-986 miles -- Traveller 15w-40 hdeo & Fram CH6004 filter; 986 miles (yesterday) -- 1qt (950mL) Supertech 15w-40 hdeo and 650mL Shell 10w-40 pcmo (1.6L volume w/filter change) & Fram CH6004 filter...

I do short OCI's when I buy new or used rides for the first 1000-1500 miles for break-in (new) or flush (used); next spring I will use straight 15w-40 hdeo & OEM filters for warmer months...haven't decided on what to use for end of season storage oil (might be mix of leftover hdeo & 10w-40 pcmo) & filter (might be another of the Frams I bought on closeout)

Bike: 2004 CBR150R. 1 litre of oil per change. No oil filter.

Oil: Shell Rimula R4X 15w40 Mineral

Didnt record mileage clocked, but used it for about 11 days doing food delivery in a stop-go urban environment.

Shifts nicely when new, started feeling a little roughness in shifting at around the 8-9th day and gets noticably notchier on the 10-11 day.

Drained out like water (compared to the new oil going in) when I did the oil change yesterday. Smooth shifting lasts longer than the previous oil I used (Pennzoil Fastrac 4T Titanium Synthetic).

Will be doing an oil change next week to see how it goes. Overall happy with the cost to performance ratio of the oil at the moment.

end of season oil changes...late autumn, winter storage, early spring

both moto & scoot got a frankenbrew...leftover frankenbrew of synthetc 15w-40 (amsoil), synthetic 10w-40 (suzuki moto), various conventional 15w-40 & 10w-40 oils and new frankenbrew of conventional 15w-40 & 10w-40 oils; the bike got a new fram ch6004 filter & left the current hiflo filtro hf197 on the scoot (less than 1500 miles in use prior to oil change)

the moto went into storage without any ride time on the oil & the scoot has @ 350 miles without any issues; if weather allows riding into 2nd half of November I might do another oil-filter change on the scoot (same frankenbrew & hiflo filtro hf183)...not a fan of storing with oils that have 500+ miles on them (guess it's OCD)

In, Amalie 10w40 and 20w50 50/50 mix, K&N engine filter (WM closeout) and Rotax trans filter.
The Spyder shears oil like crazy, I've given up on UOA, they all come back out of grade range after a couple thousand miles. Brad Penn, Valvoline, Mobil, LubroMoly... they all were out of grade.
I just go 3k now, spike it with a heavier grade if I feel like it, and just ride.

Changed the oil on my 06 Yamaha R1

out/off Rotella 15/40 and Q-state 14612 filter

put in a mixture of Rotella 15w40 and 5w40, about 75 percent 15w40 and 25 percent 5w40

I meant to put on a Supertech 6607 but after installing it and running the bike i found it to be leaking around the gasket, its like i couldn't get the filter tight, like it turned on fine and then just stopped like it bottomed out on the threads or something, anyways it didn't feel right when i tried to tighten it again and again so i removed it and installed a Bosch distance plus filter instead in the same size and that one went on fine and tightened like it should and didn't leak.

very strange, first time thats happen, the difference in the filters were the the bosch was a little bit longer, i should take a look inside the supertech and see if there was some interference with something in the filter and filter stud. only thing i could think of that would be an issue.

anyways...

Pulled the engine ,pulled the head and cylinders, put in new rings on the existing pistons, replaced valve guide seals and all the gaskets...First oil in was Rotella T4 15-40 used for about 75 miles. Rings seated quickly..Then a change to Quicksilver 20/50 bike oil....I think the engine has the faint sound of valve clatter with the Quicksilver...And first gear makes a slight crunch going in...

CVT is basically a centrifugal clutch that opens up (with rpm's) to vary the speed range.
No oil needed.

The only other oil is regular 80-90 gear oil in the rear end.

did early oil changes on both the scoot & the moto due to more frequent idling & stop-n-go in traffic (paving, sewer pipe replacements, oil & natural gas pipeline construction zones); kept oil filters in place & used 'frankenbrew' of 15w-40's (traveller, valvoline white bottle) & leftover frankenbrew (10w-40 & 15w-40 & a touch of 10w-30 hdeo); think I added Amsoil OE 15w-40 a while back to augment the frankenbrew...

got less than a gallon left...might thin it out a bit with some 10w-40 m/c oil to do oil changes in the fall for winter storage

Just curious, why the mixing?

Rumor was the "Maxum4" or Extra4 had a good FM and AW pack. I only dug up to VOA/UOA of what the pack could look like:

https://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/478573/1
https://forums.noria.com/topic/maxima-extra-4-synthetic-add-pack

The main design was to start with an already stout 15w40 HDEO (RT5), and fortify it further with something thicker (60weight) and with more AW/FM(ester/moly/antimony/boron.)
The old mix came out tan, but clear. I was tempted to just put it back in, but I had 3 quarts of Valv Syn MC 10w40 and 1qt 20w50 to use (read: paranoid.)
If the old mix sheared too low, I figured the 20w50 would help balance that. Since its all very stout now, I probably won't change it until late next spring.

good to see other folks using the fram ch6004 filters! I used several during the break-in on my v star 250 with lower mileage oci's (bought used last year with 23 miles)...mostly the older ones made in India (less pleats, thicker media, some wide spacing); using the ones made in China (more pleats, thinner media, tight spacing) for late season oci's (mid-late autumn/winter storage/early spring); bought them on clearance from advanced auto parts stores in the area;

I've got one more chinese made ch6004 and 3 oem yamaha filters...major differences: fram is stamped metal construction vs yamaha using thermopolymer construction (guessing the relief valve spring is metal coil); fram has more pleats & thinner media and yamaha has less pleats & thicker media; both have tight spacing

Re: Post Your Latest Oil Change! - 10/27/18 05:44 PM

I'll be doing the Spyder today. 998cc Rotax VTwin. This thing shears oil like crazy between the gearset and the hydraulic gear shift.
CanAm sells a 5w40 that they say will run a ridiculous amount of miles, (8000 plus in the new 3 cylinder). UOA's have been in the 20 weight range from the VTwin at 5k.
I can't see the logic.
Out, 60/40 10w40 and 20w50 Amalie, K&N engine filter, Rotax trans filter. The exact same thing will go right back in.
Last UOA at 3500 miles and I was still in the 40 weight range, although getting close to the 30 weight cutoff.
When I'm done with the Amalie, I think I'm just going to switch to VR-1 40 weight.

2015 KTM 1190 Adventure @ 12,500 km,

OUT: Motorex Cross Power 4T 10W60, KTM OEM filter, OCI 11,500 km, 15 months.

IN: TOTAL Quartz Racing 10W50, KTM OEM filter.

This is the first time I've used this particular oil, but I've been using Total products almost exclusively for the last few years. Their prices are simply unbeatable when shopping direct at the local distributor... like about half the price of equivalent products at auto super-stores (Mobil, Castrol etc).

The Quartz may be overkill, but it is less than half the price of the Motorex from the KTM dealer. Given the bike is still in warranty, I'm prepared to pay a bit more to ensure the oil quality is not in doubt. Normally I use Total Racing 4T which is their "full synthetic" albeit Class III. When I asked about the base oils, they said it was not disclosed, but they expect that Quartz is more than half Class IV base, and Racing 4T less than half Class IV base.

I bought the last pack of Quartz they had. They said the Racing 4T is so good (and nearly half the price) that most of their customers are going to that instead. And it is no longer listed on the manufacturer's web site either.

The spec is 3.6 L but most people find it takes 4.0 L to get to the upper fill mark. I started with 3.6 which was about in the middle of the acceptable range. I added 250 mL, then another 150 mL once the bike was fully warmed up to ensure it wasn't over-filled. The 4.0 L is perfect.

Most recent oil change in the 2001 ZRX1200, out with Mobil 1 10w40 4T Racing and in with Mobil 1 20w50 Vtwin. Use Hi-Flo filters each change. Either of those oils is a top choice for minimal shear (maintains shift quality) over a 5000 mile OCI.

I used to go with 15w40 HDEO’s, shift quality fell off after 3000-3500 miles versus the fine shift quality still remaining at almost 5000 miles with a good syn MC specific oil. I could have legitimately left the M1 10w40 4T in for another 2000 miles or more given shift quality and the TBN remaining was 6.5. No dino HDEO is doing that, promise.

The forks were diving more than I cared for, so I swapped the spacer tube (5.875" steel tube) for a 6.25" PVC tube (0.375" extension) to add preload. Swapped fork oil for something with less dampening than the SS-47. Took it for a ride, and all is good!

I've tried HDEO , both 10-30 and 15-40, in three different brands and noticed that change with all of them. It's the reason I don't use them, hard to get that seamless shift with the clutch being a little too grabby.

1999 Honda Rebel 250 1,900 miles odometer (Not mine)

Drained: 10 year old + ?? smelly dark oil...probably from the factory lol

Added: Valvoline white bottle 15w-40 HD ($3 per gallon walmart clearance)

Bike ran smooth with old oil as it does with the new, old oil did have that acidic smell though..

2018 Ninja 400

Lucas 10W-40 Semi-synthetic motorcycle and a wix filter. Both from a local auto parts store, $7.50 a quart for the oil, not bad.
