are these bus tours a good way to see NYC?

Listen to Kira. And add Belvedere Castle in Central Park, Columbus Circle, Battery Park. When walking, keep in mind avenues run north and south, streets run east and west. The bus tours are susceptible to traffic jams.

ok guess the bus is a no go. We are staying a great neck so will most likely take the LIRR out to wherever we need to go. we will really only have 2 1/2 days to see it. gotta do the 9/11 site and statue and wall street and Chinatown and time square . we are foodies also so will even try the quite overpriced Katz just to try once.

Another thing to keep in mind with the tour bus. You can sit in traffic and take 10 minutes to move a block or two, so you might get to see the Empire State Building for 10 minutes w/o moving. Get on the top of a double decker in the 90F weather we had today and you'll get a real appreciation for the place. Once again, I recommend to use the subway system. Pick what you want to see and use the subway and walk, spend as little or as much time as you like visiting the sites. Map it out ahead of time and set up your own tour of the city.

Usually:

1) The jobs pay a lot (i.e. investment banking)
2) Got a rent control place that's real cheap
3) Family already there
4) They are used to it.

The same can be said in a different way about anywhere else in the US, like Silicon Valley or South Dakota.

Having been to New York City a couple of times-the Hop-On/Hop-Off buses are a great way to get around the city and have some narration as you tour. For example-Hop off at Central Park, spend some time, and then hop on and head to the Art Museum. The subways are OK-but they are crowded and there are "characters" on the subway-after all it is NEW YORK. They can be used both as a "tour" and a form of transportation as you go around the city.

Some of the above of replies clearly don't understand what they are and can be used for.

Oh yeah, there's those dancers and others that beg for money while on the trains. Just politely decline.

Hmm... not trying to troll, but I suppose it could be taken either way, some would say that's proof of the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is New York.
