I love how he hammers subaru bc of their antiquated opposed 4cyl and the Straight 4 is somehow more modern innovative?? The guy is hard to take. If he loved subaru he would still be hard to take.

I gave the Scotty Kilner Youtube channel a couple of tries, but didn't care for his personality. Makes me cringe my teeth thinking back to watching those two video's.

I was at the Subaru/Mazda dealership this week for a recall (brake fuse) on my Crosstrek. They have a 2020 Mazda3 AWD hatchback in the showroom. The interior is very impressive with great materials and layout. In fact it is up there with some German luxury brands that I sat in last year when shopping for my wife's new SUV. Mazda knocked this one out of the park. However, Subaru fits my style better, rough around the edges just like me. I'll take boxy, quirky, with wonderful outward visibility all day long.

Id pick the mazda cx5 gtr or sig over the xt both for fun and reliability.

I had not seen it, however having previously viewed the SK parody youtube linked, not surprised by his choice. Scotty makes me laugh, looks like he's got some form of dyskinesia. Then of course there's the obligatory mention of his years of mechanical experience. yada yada yada.

I have never driven a Subaru so can't really say which one is better than the other.

My Mazda experience (2010 Mazda 3 GT/ 6 speed manual) was incredible to say the least. Can't remember exact mileage when I traded it but want to say it was prob close to 80k and the only issue ever experienced was the HVAC recirculate actuator that went bad and was fixed under warranty. One set of tires, a multitude of oil changes (every 5k), couple cabin filters, couple sets of wipers and 1 engine air filter was the only maintenance I had to do to that car.

Rotary engine aside I have to say that I would have utmost confidence in Mazda getting things right with their powertrains and the technologies attached to them.

He is a lot to take but his shtick appeals to certain element of population. Reminds me of person doing rallies.

And you have!

I see the use of the term "fun" as a relative term. Say, "fun" as compared to a 1966 Landy.

I find them all barely tolerable. And the Mazda design is hideously feminine and inappropriate.

As my car is hideous and derivative, too. The VW.

Considering that they don’t make the rotary anymore, you should be confident.

The rotary they are working on is way to small to power a vehicle.

Just realized the Subaru Crosstrek is majorly derivative of the Ford Focus 5door and the Dodge Caliber from a DECADE earlier.

Toyota CVT Issues
It looks like nobody has figured out CVT transmissions. More mfgs are using them too as the new Malibu has one. The best one that I know of is the one used in the Ford Freestyle van from the mid-2000s.

That does seem to be true but much of it might be urban legend. Not saying one way or another. But lets face it the 3 speed automatic was king for 35 years. They better have gotten it right. I think it took Chrysler 30+ years to get it right..lol. I don't think they ever recovered from the push button ones of the 70's

When 3AT's ruled the roost, just how much shifting did they do? I mean, when they jacked the FD ratio up they likely had to downshift more often on the open road; but when they added OD those 4AT's were locking and unlocking the TC often. And shifting out of OD, often. I'm wondering if the 4AT's were just as robust as anything before it--it's just that every shift has the same amount of wear/damage, and the 4AT's simply wore out faster because they did more shifting than the old 3AT's.

Just speculation on my part. Certainly some of those 4AT's had some breakage patterns to suggest otherwise.

Anyhow, seems like these 6+ speed autos are pretty long lived.

I was just talking about the styling and form, how it had been around a while before the Crosstrek.

The crosstrek is just a jacked and tarted up Impreza - which can be had in 5 door "wagonette" bodystyle.
It used to be called the Outback Sport in the 90's and early 2000's

I loved my 2012 Mazda3 w/ manual, but Bambi smashed in the front so I decided to trade it for a 2016 Mazda6 w/manual. Loving it too, but it only has 36K. Hasn’t been back to the dealer for any warranty work other than a silly recall about weld spatter and electrical wires.

Unfortunately I recently discovered the manual is no longer an option except on a single model of the 3 hatchback.
