Never heard of it before.
IMHO, "northern style" would indicate adding sugar, as most iced tea I've had in the past from the US was made without sugar.
Here in Canada, iced tea without sugar is mostly unheard of
clean pure water, too many carbs are causing obesity + diabetes at alarming rates, cut the carbs + eat more healthy fats from butter, olive + avacado oil, no canola, corn, or soy of any kind + eat healthy eggs daily.

Here in Florida it is common knowledge that some northern states don't serve sweet tea. I have NY family, they have a hard time getting sweet tea at restaurants.
