I just found out that BG Products is making a Brake Fluid Conditioner to be added to brake fluid to increase corrosion resistance of the existing DOT3/4 brake fluid. Looks like it's versions of ethanol in this additive. I had to dig for the SDS to find this out..

What's everyone's thoughts? I know that DOT3 is alcohol based, but adding more?? Could it be beneficial or just snake oil?

IDK if it's snake oil but, here's my take on this. Unless the conditioner is bleed through the brake system, it'd be useless just sitting on the brake fluid reservoir. So, why not just bleed the brake system regularly?

As mentioned, bleed the system. Forget the additive. Add brake fluid from unopened containers. Don't buy brake fluid at the $$ store.

Flush and refill every 24months. No need for additive.

Cable ties should hold it

Snake oil, nothing should be added to a properly working brake system except brake fluid.

Out of all the fluids to which someone might add an additive, the last one I can think of would be brake fluid.

I never knew one existed. I change mine out every two years, I tie it into a tire rotation whenever possible. That seems to be working well. For the price of a quart of brake fluid I'd rather just have nice clean fresh fluid than mess with an additive.

It sounds like this stuff: https://www.brakebleeder.com/brakeshot/

Snake oil. Just use good fluid - any of the Japanese DOT3s or Castrol/ATE/Pentosin DOT4s. The reason why I mention the Honda and Toyota DOT3s is because CCI made them to have the same borate ester inhibitor package as the DOT4s. However, DOT4s still have a higher wet boiling point.

Thanks to everyone for their comments.. Yeah I had a feeling it was snake oil, and yes I do replace my brake fluid every 2-3 years. I just found it and wondered if it actually worked. I'm not one for snake oil, I think the only additive I've used is 44k fuel cleaner you dump into the gas tank.

and nthach- I never knew that about honda/toyota! And that's what my two vehicles are! a honda and a scion! The borate ester inhibitors.. I definitely am going to do more research into that. Looks like it's aka boronic acid.

yes it is alcohol based.

When an ethyl alcohol (also called ethanol) is combined with 3 moles of ethylene oxide, the result is triethylene glycol monomethyl ether, a glycol ether. DOT 3 is this.
