They were not wavy but the spacing was off a bit by the metal seam...

Isn't this cartridge filter subject to constant spring force on its ends, which should compensate for any minor variations in length (within tolerance)? (That's of true my Toyota cartridge filters, at least.) The housing design shouldn't require tight tolerances on filter length to avoid buckling a long one or leaking around a short one.
