Say NO! to Black Friday/Commercialism

The fact that this time period determines the overall success or failure for a retailer's fiscal year is what I find unfortunate. Most are buying things that are not needed, out of a sense of obligation and many are spending money they can't afford to spend. A sad statement, indeed, about our values.

I know that this does not apply to all, but I find most of what has become of the "holiday season" to be disgusting.

If a retailer must rely on black Friday to stay afloat, they are doing far too many things wrong...

Are they?

My understanding is that stores rely on sales to stay afloat. For some stores, the bulk of their sales come... during the holidays. Like it or not, seasonal effects can, err, affect sales. Look at apple orchards, or road work season.

Simple economics. We might blame the consumer, and no doubt the stores have a hand in it, but if consumers shopped year 'round then retailers would alter their sales model. It would appear that consumers want it this way, though. They want to do their shopping in one fell swoop it would seem. Perhaps they don't want to be sitting on all those items, taking up space in their houses.

Sure, stores rely on selling product to stay afloat. But, do they really rely on one single day to make their year? I highly doubt it. Yes, holiday shopping is important. But, what does this really accomplish? Does it just create another category of binge shopper? We already had last minute shoppers doing so on Christmas Eve. Now, we have all the early shoppers doing it on one day, too?

I don't bother with Black Friday. I hate shopping enough as it is, much less to line up for the chance to buy one of five TVs that's priced under cost or something like that.

If a retailer needs a huge sales day on Black Friday to stay afloat, I stand by my statement...

So they should charge extra on every other day of the year?

Would you be willing to pay more to shop at this vendor who doesn't throw black friday sales, shopping there every other day of the year?

I said NO to shopping during my Thanksgiving break. I'm saturated with material goods. I had a good time with friends.

Quit being ridiculous. Black Friday SHOULD be a bonus for the retailer's bottom lines, not a must have in order to stay afloat....

Jails and prisons never stop operating --- 24/7/365
Correctional Officers are at work on all holidays, kids' birthdays and ball games,
other family events.
Not many people even think about those men and women and what they have to do.
Hear a lot about law enforcement being "first responders" .......
Would CO's be "last responders"?
Prison is the end of the line!
