Who cares? They know the schedule....nobody holding them hostage.

Ultimately Americans should be having dinner on a regular basis with their immediate family, no need for a holiday to get together and enjoy a home cooked meal.

Getting paid $300 is not volunteering sorry....unless you take the $300 and give to charity whatever.

If you actually have children they grow up and live on their own and holidays are a time to get together again. In my 20's I lived abroad and cross country and would make effort to get together with family. One year family surprised me as I could not travel due to injury and brought cooked meal hot on plane. The flight staff and security was accommodating.

I think xmas/new year and thanksgiving are great American traditions.

We live in a largely capitalist country. There is no requirement that companies allow ANY time off other than legislated time like family leave, voting, military service, etc. I am not a fan of the BF madness, but if others enjoy it, more power to them. Perhaps even the risk of being trampled adds more excitement to the experience (that was a JOKE). If you feel very strongly about shopping venues being open during the actual Thanksgiving holiday itself don't just sit it out and fume. Send feedback to every retailer you know of, via their web sites, who is doing it and lodge your complaint. I doubt it will be overly effective, but it is known that for every one person who lodges a complaint there about a hundred who fume silently. If a company gets enough complaints it's possible that reconsideration could take place.

I don't participate because I personally hate traffic and crowds. Others don't mind - great! I do more of my shopping for items other than staples online every year. That is the future. I don't buy into the whole "gift giving season" concept. I buy things for people throughout the year. When I stumble across something that I think has their name written all over it I buy it for them, no special event required. If I hear, through active listening, that they need something they have no time or inclination to research I do it for them and buy it. These gifts tend to be appreciated a lot more because they are not bought out of a sense of obligation to an almost entirely commercial holiday (Jesus wasn't even born in December). I don't disappoint my kids. They both want money so that's what I give them. NEVER any disappointment with that.

I would rather not belong to an economy that judges its success on pushing unneeded stuff to a lot of people who can't afford it, but that is the way it is right now. Enjoy whatever activity you choose today and happy holidays!

Yep, lots of Americans can't afford to buy relatives presents for Christmas but do so anyways.

Both my parents are immigrants and came here in the 1950's..... buying presents was foreign (no pun intended) to them when they first came to the USA. Do you really have to spend money to have family and friends ???

There is no Christmas tree in my house, zero need for me to 'celebtate' a national holiday and spend money.

Indeed, just the way it is.

Coworkers look at me askew when I tell them I stay 5 years behind the technology curve; I didn't get a smartphone until a year or so ago. When I tell them I paid $90 for it, and $6/month, they get why. Kinda. I think it's still an enigma to not be with the latest and greatest.

Wife and I are slowly moving towards not participating in the gift giving thing. It's not much of a gift if it's expected.

Remember its the way of capitalism--you can never have enough cellphones, you must have the latest big screen tv ( your neighbors will think less of you), and the latest suv, and remember the shirts with the alligator on them, and the latest microwave, and and and ski boat, and and out board fishing motor with 200 hp on your boat,,wow,,did I mention the dually to pull all that....wow,,,you must be working 3 jobs to buy all this,,,wait,,,you won the lotto....

Sorry for borrowing only a portion of your statement, but this is it. This is the phrase that really boils it down. But, have we ever learned how to be happy? For most of us it requires spending a lot of money; that goes for home remodeling. new cars, clothes, etc. We all feel inferior in some way to someone else who has "more" than we do. We know nothing about them other than what we see on the surface. We may live less stressful lives, work less, and keep more of what we earn, yet somehow, we are inferior due to our possessions.

Maybe the best holiday gift we can give ourselves this year is an adjustment of perspective. The vast majority of the world has real reasons to be less happy than we are yet...

I do my shopping after work. Gotta get those 40 hours even through side jobs. I've been eyeing out for a new cable modem since I've been paying over $1,000 in cable modem fees since I've moved to cable internet.

I probably will go shopping somewhere tomorrow, but not during the morning. Maybe in the afternoon once the crazies have come and gone.

He is volunteering in the sense that he is willing to work the oncall vs being forced into it because nobody else wants to.

Best time to go....and you miss out on most of the nuts....

I drove around just to see the craziness in motion. I walked in a store, went to pee and left. I get really disturbed seeing people standing in lines with small children just for a object.Nevermind these idiots will be sick from the cold and being out all night and then they bring their germs and snotty noses to work. I felt good that I didnt buy anything and felt better seeing places closed and giving a day to the people. I miss blue laws, everything closed on Sunday minus pharmacy.

Bought a $4 movie and 2 bottles of beer so far. Anything else isn't looking promising.

I think I'm getting old because I found more people to be less tolerable and the joy of being out less fun. We left the last store around 10:30 and there were plenty of people with young kids out, which we both found disgusting.

Yes, get paid for your time and service. I should have said.... 'Opt to be on call'
Some people love it and others avoid it.

What's sad is that Christmas has turned into a retail exploitation day. Christmas Day is a celebration of the birth of Jesus. I'm hoping to go to Midnight Mass this year (which is on Christmas Eve).

I spent Canadian thanksgiving with some friends who are far away from family. Was a good time. Black Friday was a great time for me to do my Christmas shopping and get parts/oil for my vehicles.

I typically avoid the crowds of shoppers on Black Friday, but Menards had a great deal on something I needed, a log splitter. Might as well take advantage of the opportunity to save a few hundred bucks. I got in line a few minutes before they opened, got in, got what I needed, and got to the checkouts before the huge mobs did so I didn't have to wait in line.

We do not have cable or satellite tv. We do have a router for our computer and watch HULU movies and youtube stuff...works for us, but now there are only 2 of us and no kids, peace in our times....

Not one mention in this thread of the OP's signature.

No disrespect intended and as much as I love cars, the entire automotive industry (OP's bread 'n butter) is nothing but commercialism. Perhaps I am acting like the drive-by media and making a mountain out of a mole hill?
