Hmmm just contacted the maker of RM43, and the customer support said that if there is vegetation in the area I want to spray, I have to keep the product away from the tree, a distance of twice the length of the longest branch (to make sure the product doesn't get in contact with the roots). That is disappointing, I still might buy it for far back reaches of my yard, but I'll have to find something else for the areas close to that tree.
FWIW, they also confirmed they want you to cut down to 6 inches, and then allow for 2 weeks of new growth. The 6 inches is because one of the active ingredients in the product needs contact with the soil; the 2 weeks is that the other main ingredient works only on plants growing above the ground and they want new foliage to come into contact with the product.
