I have a distant memory, which may be two memories juxtaposed. I'm 4 or 5 and running down a treed street. (This was in the era of children going free-range.) I'm running toward the tailend of a parked '59 Chevy, and I am in awe of the space-age styling. It is lightyears ahead of Dad's '49 Mercury Monarch or Grandpa's '49 Plymouth. As a then seven-year-old, I thought those fins were the coolest thing. When traveling in the back seat of my parents' car, I'd count the '59 Chevys that I saw.
Then I look up and see a swept-wing 4-engined jetliner leaving bold contrails, a Douglas DC-8 or a Boeing 707, and think "Ah! The modern age is here!"
