With the condition of the subject engine, it will at least need several OCI's. That carbon looks baked on. Pistons are likely even worse? This is a great little real-world test.

Using this oil in my 08 Civic. All i can say so far is the R&P runs very smoothly indeed despite the lower moly content. No issues, not that any was expected.

I don’t think I need restore and protect, lol. 2015 Tacoma 4.0L 136K. OCI 5500-6500 miles. Amsoil middle tier oil with biotech.

I’ll take what Critic said - oil cap pics are not fully indicative of what piston/ring landings look like … Especially with GDI …
(I’d have much faith with Amsoil SS - but not all) …

I’ve done a few runs with SS 0W30 10K intervals. Granted port injection helps. My wife’s Honda Pilot is DI and use SS 0W20 but I follow the OLM. I’m about to run SS 0W30. It sees idle time waiting to pick up the kid.

Like HPL recommends, you might want to consider just a filter swap and top off at 2k or even 1k if you notice a lot of stuff coming free.

The oil in the filter would come out, but not much more. You won't drain all 4 quarts just by removing the filter

Will only lose no more than 12-16 oz, probably less if filter is small. Just top off the oil on the dipstick if you change the filter only.

It's plausible that the Toyota in question would have experienced the same results on any synthetic compared to the "generic oil changes every 3,000 miles."

I don't think anyone has found this oil fixed or drastically reduced the amount of oil burning in an engine known for it due to ring/piston design.

From what I think read here and other forums. Nothing will keep it from grenading itself. Frequent changes with good oil will possibly give you more time from pin pull to explosion.....or not.

He said you can barely tell it is running when idling.

That’s more a function of the engine design and condition, not the oil. Think early 1990s Lexus LS400 videos with champagne glasses on the hood, vs a 1990s IDI Ford diesel. One will purr with any oil, the other with none.

That means an early filter change might be wise, not 54 miles on the filter obviously, but if you see the crud really dissappearing it's time
