hey guys there is so much information on this website I am having trouble figuring anything out. I have a new 07 silverado with a regular 5.3 that has 1500 miles on it. I want to use a good oil regular or syntetic doesn't really matter. I have always liked valvoline but it doesn't say gm6094 on the back so whats the story with that. I have short drive only like 3 miles to work so that is something to consider also.

Maxlife 10W-30 . . . case closed

For those short drives that won't see normal operating temperatures much, a synthetic would be my choice. Quaker State QHorsepower or Pennzoil Platinum are best money values right nw.

Valvoline DOES meet GM6094M with their Conventional oil.

Here is the PDF. Valvoline PDF for their Conventional oils.

It only meets it with 5w-30 and 10w-30 since GM does not require any 5w-20 in their line (except the honda powered VUE)

Excellent oil and your engine will be well protected and stay clean using this oil and following the OLM.

Go with 0w-30 or 5w-30 for better startup protection. Valvoline conventional is just fine. If you switch to a Syn. wait till your break in period is done.

I'm with you merkava, nothing wrong with 10w30 at startup.
I belive it is better in the long run that it takes less time to get fully in-to grade.
I'm running 5w30 next oci though, my fuel usage sucks.

5W30s are the way of the future... 10W30 is an outdated spec and really is only better in NOACK testing by a small margin.

5W-30's are loaded up with viscosity index improvers to where 10W-30's give you more "meat" in the base oil. But 5W-40 is better than both of them.

The valvoline web site shows Durablend and Conventional 5w-30 and 10w-30 meeting the GM spec. No where does 5w-20 show up.

In fact, the Synpower does not show that it meets it in any grade.

5w-20 is not a GM spec'd oil so I doubt they would approve it or even test it.

Where did you get your info? GM or Valvoline or ???

It is a GM approved lubricants list from GM. If you look on the back of PP it has the approval of GM 6094 for 5W-20. GM is slowly approving 5W-20 usage.

'07 Silverado Owners Manual-...SAE 5W30 is best for your vehicle. Do not use other viscosity oils such as SAE 20W50.

In Ohio, where it could potentially get below 0, then 5w-30 would be the better choice.

And since 5w-30s in general use more refined base oils (group II and group II+, and group III in some cases), it's fine in higher temps and may contain less VIIs than you think. Plus, VIIs are much better today than yesteryear.

Dad's blazer has 207,000 miles, pretty much all on 5w-30 dino. Still gets well over 20 mpg highway, has the same oil pressure that it did 200,000 miles ago, and runs great.
