I am looking at purchasing a new impact wrench and air compressor since I currently have neither. My main current goal is to ensure that I have enough torque to break loose the crank pulley bolt when doing the timing belt job on my '02 Accord V6. What say ye that have done this job before? 700 ft-lbs, 1/2" adequate?

Ingersoll-Rand 1/2 in. Impact Wrench 2135

I want the compressor to have an oil-lubricated pump. I have a 240V outlet already where I plan to put the compressor.

Craftsman 80 Gal. Vertical Air Compressor, 5.4 hp SCFM Delivery At 100 psi: 13.3 SCFM

I know it is a different beast, but I did a front crank bolt on a Dodge Dakota 3.9 (2003) with a 350ft/lb 1/2" I have the 33 gal. craftsman compressor myself.

Oh, it will be a while prior to TB replacement; it will be down the road a year or two. I don't want to buy something now that won't do the jobs later.

Oh, not with that impact he won't.

If I can ever kill my IR 2131, that impact is one of the finalists on my must have list.

I've split impact sockets on a 1inch gun trying to get Honda crank pulley bolts out.You need the pulley holding tool so you can lock it up or work one against the other.Otherwise the Indian rope trick works best.

The impact gun is either going to break the crank bolt loose, or it's going to start turning the engine over; one of the two.

I've found that using an impact wrench with short bursts works much better in loosening these bolts than just pulling the trigger and letting it rip for 15 minutes.

Depends on whether his Accord is a manual or automatic trans. For manual, simply slot into 4th gear and put the parking brakes on and block the wheels with a brick. That will stop the engine from turning.

If you can't break the bolt loose with an impact, there's always the cheater bar against the ground and bump the starter trick.

He's talking about using a breaker bar attached to the socket and then leaning the bar up against something. When you bump the starter, it will either break the bolt loose, break the bendix gear on the starter, or break a tooth off the flywheel; one of the three will happen.

More than likely the breaker bar will survive unscathed though.

Works on anything but a Honda - Honda's rotate anticlockwise, and that trick will make it even tighter. The pulley locking tool has been developed for a reason, you can do damage putting too much force through the crankshaft to get the bolt loose.

No. All Honda V6's rotate clockwise. So do the newer 4 cyl engines. The OLD 4 cyl engines rotated counterclockwise. That's why you may be confused.

BTW please don't try the breaker bar/starter bump method. That's an old redneck trick, and bad things are likely to occur.

The impact will probably break it loose if you have a good strong air source. Also remember to use a short 19mm IMPACT socket when trying to break it loose. Long sockets and extensions absorb energy and mean less loosening force on the bolt. Never ever use chrome sockets with impact guns.

If that doesn't work you will need the aforementioned special crank holder tool, along with a serious breaker bar and a strong friend to help you out.

Benjammining,

HarborFreight has a 1" impact wrench on sale for less that $100.

Can't vouch for it but it might be good enough.

That impact and compressor will get that bolt out. If it doesn't at first, let the compressor run to its max psi, then try it again.

An impact wont turn the engine over either. Unless you leave it on there for longer then need be, which would be pointless. If it doesn't take the bolt out after a few blast of the gun, it never well.

I've used an impact on my '01 Civic, and it came out just fine.
