toilet fill flush valve question

Fluidmaster products all I use, fill valve and flapper. Prefer the flapper with total metal chain as ime plastic can get tangled on refill. https://www.fluidmaster.com/products/toilet/flappers/502-performax-adjustable-2-flapper/

One weird experience with Fm fill valve. Started getting an occasional high pitched squealing noise in one bathroom. After some sleuthing turned out to be fill valve, likely the top black part. Not wanting to chance on parting out, replaced whole fill valve. Problem solved. Fm fill valve gasket can go after awhile, but IME the awhile is a long time and easily replaced.

Some people prefer Lavelle/Korky. I think they came later in making fill valves, but their QuietFill fill valve is extremely easy to install and works quite well. It also can adjust to a lower height than the universal Fluidmaster fill valves. My parents asked me to help with the low-profile Kohler toilets. The only fill valves that seem to fit are the OEM Fluidmaster ones, that cost a small fortune, an aftermarket from Fluidmaster that's still pricey, or a universal Korky that works well.

I have a couple of American Standard Cadet 3 toilets with 3" flapper. These are the ones with the tube around the chain. I've never had a problem with it getting tangled (the tube is actually supposed to reduce it getting tangled) but I did have a problem with the silicone seal a few times. I'd just get a small leak until I pulled out the seal and put in back on. The flapper is mostly plastic, so theoretically it only needs a new seal if the rest is intact. Home Depot has the exact replacement part, but it's marketed as for their house-brand Glacier Bay toilets. I've seen it in their stores, and it does say that it's the exact part as the Fluidmaster 540 with adjustment for the American Standard Cadet 3. There's that little thing that adjusts the opening size in the cup.
