I’ve had a 2015 Crosstrek for about 8 years and have always used 0w-20, but always contemplating going with 5w-30. Now Subaru recommends 0w-16 for 2024.

I’m in South Florida full time. Would you use their recommendation of 0w-16 or stick with 0w-20?

It is CAFE related.
South Florida, you are at pretty much sea level. Cooling is much easier.
To give you an example. A few weeks ago, I was blasting up the Vail Pass (above 10,000ft) at around 80mph in Atlas. I managed to get oil temperature to 255f.
I was doing 90mph in the Arizona desert recently, around 100-102 ambient temperature, and oil temperature was 217f.
Altitude is killer! High ambient temperature but low elevation is a non-issue. Your cooling system will keep oil temperature in check.

So, do not worry about that. Now, 0W16? I personally would not go.
 
Being in Florida I'd use full syn 5w-20 or 10w-30. A lower vis index is better in warm climates. But i'm saying no on the 0w-16. The engine wasn't designed with that spec from the start. No faith should be placed on thinner back spec'd recommendations, It's clearly a CAFE credit situation.
 
I thought 0W20 was thin enough! I run 0W30 or 5W30 syn now that the engine is out of warranty. I did do several dealer oil changes, and I think next time I would get them to use their 5W30 syn, as dealer bulk oil can be something pretty cheap? I'd rather have cheap 5W30 in than 0W20, there's a bit more varnish than I would expect for our mostly highway usage.
 
Most Subarus I see are often older people driving very very conservatively, or vegans going to get their soy lattes. Jokes aside, it's probably fine for in town driving like 99% of them operate in. I would use a 20 or 30 grade personally.
 
Is CAFE still a thing? Is the Crosstrek classified as a truck?

Also, were there any changes to the engine that would allow this? 2.0 AND 2.5 variants?
 
Go by the manual. Engineers always know best......... Never doubt them...
