Starter lifespan

It is all over the place:

95 Corolla: starter at around 160k, worn brushes
97 Integra: original still at 264k, working fine
97 Camry: heat soak related issue at 145k, so I guess it is the coil and not the brushes
93 Escort: 5 digit odo and crushed at 81k (or is it 181k), still original
01 Taurus: sold at 110k and still original starter
08 IS250: 100k, still original starter

Same deal with all the UZ family V8s. GM did the same with the N* V8s.

I can do 4 Northstar starters to the hardest 1UZ-FE. The 4.7L isn't really that bad.

I haven't had a bad starter since around 1980 on an old Plymouth. Nothing but Fords and no starter problems on any of them.

In the handful of repairs to parents 2000 Tundra V8 with 137k owned since brand new the starter died last year.

Apparently a difficult replacement on this engine costing $675 for part and labor($65/hr).

The Tundra/Sequoia and 4Runner V8/GX/LX version of the 2UZ-FE have air injection and the air pump is also in the V.

I was about to tackle that job on an original Lexus LS400, taking off the intake and fuel rails/EGR/wiring wasn't the hard part. R&R of the starter bolts and not damaging a nearly 30-year old wiring harness that runs over a water crossover bridge was. The knock sensor harnesses for the 1990-1994 era engines are NLA. The EGR pipe from the right-hand cat and knock sensor harnesses are suggested PM parts for when the the starter is serviced. The 1995-1997 era engines use two EGR pipes, and the 1998-2007 engines don't use EGR.

Obligatory:

Heh, I stumbled across that vid the other day. Entertaining.

I've had to replace starters in most of my vehicles, in my use case, typically around 140K miles, be it Toyota, Nissan, BMW, Porsche. I suspect the life expectancy changes drastically with the environment and number of starts per day.

Oddly, in some of those vehicles, the miles would be put on very quickly, while others would be 10+ years old. The earliest one was 70K and two years old in 1999.

He's very annoying to listen to but most of what he says mirrors what I have experienced working in garages. Especially when it comes to Dodge products like the ram and smaller (front drive) Jeep's and cars.

That was 5 minutes of him ranting through everything he thought sucked about the Ram like each thing was going to be the problem to only get to a standard bad starter. It was 90% nonsense and 10% technical. A typical bumbling fool Scotty Kilmer video.

Glad I didn't watch that one, I do find a lot are like clickbait because the title only refers to about 10% of what the whole video is about.

Worse thing about rams is the fenders and box sides rusting out in 4 to 6 years. I haven't heard of any other vehicle rusting that fast here.
