That’s why a cross lug wrench stood the test of time … albeit I likely pull more than push on them …

This. I've always kept a four-way lug wrench in my trunk. It fits quite nicely on top of the spare tire. It makes changing a tire on the side of the road, the few times I've had to do it, a much faster (and, thus safer) exercise.
