I like Rotella T5 10w-30 in mowers. Got two ancient Kohler Commands that are at around 2000 hours on a steady diet of Rotella T5.
i have a couple gallons of delo 15w40 but im hearing it aint what it used to be. the zddp levels are down

Nice mower! I’m sure it will serve you well. I doubt that you’ll be mowing much below 50F. So, Kohler recommends 10W30 or SAE 30. I run SAE 30 HD in my Toro and will likely continue. I’ve been using Super Tech. Next change, I will switch to Rotella T1 SAE 30 or Chevron Delo 400 SAE 30. SAE 30 HD is all that I’ve ever used in any mower that I’ve owned and that’s my suggestion.

My Kohler Command Pro 27 (CV 740) uses Wix 51348 filters. Its a better quality filter than the Kohler E-core, and comes in at less than half the cost. Don't pay the Kohler markup for a mediocre oil filter...

I use Delo 15w40 in mine, but will be switching to M1 15w50 once the Delo runs out.

my bad. i ahould have opened that up and not bothered joining the oil discussion forum.
Usually the manual gives the oil recommendations. It is a good starting point I would use the 15w-40 as the engine isn't a high stress engine .15W50 would be excellent as well, change the hydro oils and new air filters regularly some grease if needed and mow away.

Lotta folks run 15w-40 in lawn equipment too. The only oil I stay away from for air cooled engines is 5w-30/5w-40/0w-40/etc. like you'd put in your car. Common theme is just use a diesel rated semi or full synthetic, good quality 15w-40, or straight 30/HD30 and the mower engine will last longer than you want it to!

Very well said!

Less worrying, more mowing.

how often do yall change hydrolic oil? that hasnt even crossed my mind. i did read that scag uses conventional 20w50 for hydrolic oil though

Change the original hydraulic oil after the first 75-100 hours. Then, change every 200-300 hours, depending on your manual. I used Super Tech 20W50 for my first change. I will change again at 300 hours. Scag puts Hydro-Gear ZT-2800s on that machine. Hydro-Gear says 20W50 conventional is fine.

I agree with the manual. Use a good synthetic 10w30 like Mobil 1, Pennzoil Platinum or Castrol EDGE. I thought the 10w30 T5 had changed the formulation and ratings. Ed
