I finally got my hands on the motorcraft fl500s replacement. The fl2121. This is for the 5.0 coyote and 3.5 ecoboost among many other engines. It’s very light compared to other filters for these engines with its composite center tube and fiber end caps. It has lots of filter media measuring 48” x 3.5”. And that media is very strong especially when compared to a 500s which I always found to be weak and brittle. Very easy to tear. No issues with tearing here. I stretched it out and pulled… it wouldn’t break. Very impressed with these so far. I will be using one on my next change. But that won’t be for a while. I’ve sworn off motorcraft / purolator for a long time. Since about 2010. But with these I think I’ll be visiting the dealer more often.

Nice photos. Now it my eyes or is this plastic center tube? Thank You

Here’s a comparison side by side of the 500s and the 2121. 48” x 3.5” for the 2121 and 48” x 3” for the 500s.

Motorcraft also went from a base end bypass on the FL-500S to a dome end bypass on the replacement FL-2121-B12. Guess Ford isn't too concerned where the bypass valve is located now.

Its interesting that the FL2122 that is the FL820 replacement uses metal endcaps while the FL500 replacement FL2121 uses fiber endcaps. I recently bought a 2022 F150 3.5 EcoBoost and wanting a bigger filter I found out that Ford makes a FL820 "racing" filter that says it can be used in place of both FL820 and FL500. Problem is the racing filters are special order and cost a lot. But knowing that an FL820 can be used in place of a FL500 I bought a Purolator FL820 equivalent PBL24651. It was a little tricky to get it installed because it is bigger. Mainly had to snake it up a different way from the side but it fits in there just fine. Anyways point is if you want metal endcaps with the bypass in the top and a metal center tube you should be able to use the FL2122. You will want to double check the gasket will seal on the flange (which I did for the Purolator). I know the FL500 has an 8 psi bypass while the FL820 has a 16 psi bypass. I don't think the bypass pressure is reason Ford specs the FL500 for the engine but rather a smaller filter is used because it is easier to get in and out.

Question. The promotional flier lists certain advantages underneath each filter. Do you think the advantages apply to both the FL2122 and FL2121 or just the ones they are listed under?

The top image seems to claim more of a premium offering that is positioned if using synthetic oils. Both are obviously up to spec for their respective application.
