Kohler 19 engine or starter issue

I have a time cutter 4200 with the Kohler 19hp engine It was working fine, I shut it off and when I restarted it it was making a terrible noise. It sounds like the starter is not disengaging after it starts. Could that be possible. If so what would cause this a bad starter or bad solenoid. I know I put a starter in it and quite possibly a solenoid a few years ago. I am not sure how to troubleshoot this. Unit is about 15 years old

Thanks, will look at it early next week. I had to finish with self propelled. will a bad solenoid cause the starter gear to not retract?

Could be a bad starter relay. Does it have a push button or keyswitch?

It has a keyswitch

A quick update as I looked into this today. A piece of the plastic of the starter housing broke off and prevented the starter from from disengaging. I have a new starter on order
