This is correct. The fuels will mix as soon as there's any agitation from driving, even just leaving the pump. I would also have thrown in some 2-stroke oil. You're fine.
Gas will float on diesel fuel. I see it happen every day. Ever time I crack a line on top of a pipe gas comes out first.
It doesn't take much gas to ruin a lot of diesel fuel either. Some engines are more susceptible that others to it though.
