Fram Ultra now rated up to 20K miles?

I don't know of a car or LD truck out there that's going to have an IOLM getting out to 20k miles. So the risk is non-existent for Fram. They can claim a super-duper long FCI because they know there's no way in Hades the OFCI will ever get there because of OTHER limits that will be incurred first.

Not unlike the hype over Mobil 1 annual oil; same limits apply.
Yes, but marketing rhetoric aside (and I understand and agree with what you are saying), will it actually last 20K miles without tearing or failing in some other way--meaning are they able to hide behind words or do they actually have a product that will do what they say? Based upon the ones that I used out to 17K, I say no problem at all and I would guess they moved the mark from 15K to 20K to compete with M1 filters.

Good question ...

My observations are limited, but (anecdotally) at least worth mentioning.
Some may recall I did some experimentation with our old 1995 Villager with the Nissan VG30E engine several years back. I ran a 10k mile OFCI with ST dino lube and a Purolator Classic white can (back before torn media was a known issue). UOA and filter autopsy showed no ill effects. I then ran a 15k mile OFCI on ST dino lube and a MC filter. Again - no ill effects. And this was on a van that was truly "severe" in the sense of soccer mom use; frequent starts and stops, short trips and long runs, cold and hot, etc. By the OEM criteria, I should have been doing OFCIs every 3k miles. And yet running 5x that factor (five times!), the UOAs and filters help up perfectly well.

So, you question is valid, but I suspect the Fram Ultra is WAY overcapacitized, even at 20k miles. Syn media with wire backing? What's likely to fail there? I routinely run "normal" cellulose filters to 10k miles. Should an Ultra not outlast them? I would think so. I would think their product is fully capable of even extreme use at 20k miles. It's just that they have an easy out in that most every scenario will limit their FCI risk long before the 20k, likely due to OEM criteria that they adopt into their limits.

I just can't see myself using a FRAM ULTRA oil filter past 5K miles.
But, now that they state they can be used up to 20K miles, I might have to up the mileage to 7.5K.

I've used this "Ultra Synthetic" filter from FRAM on two of my cars so far and haven't had any issues what so ever. I usually use the Mobil 1 filters but these were cheaper. I will continue to use them since I do 5K OCI's in my 07 Scion tC and 07 Honda Accord 4cyl. Maybe I should step up the OCI's since I really don't drive much and usually change oil about every 6 months. I always get confused on the whole time/distance change intervals because every car is different. Some say once a year while some swear by every 3K, 5K, 6K, 8K, 10K, 12K, etc. on full synthetics.

I'll try to go between 6K to 8K on my 07 tC. There is slight oil consumption but my next OCI I'm going to run Valvoline HM Full Synthetic 0W-20. Right now I'm running Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20 with a Mobil 1 M103 filter I had laying around. I really did like the Fram Ultra Synthetic filter as it was my first Fram product I've ever used due to hearing about it's shoddy history, I figure these were worth a try. I will be using the Fram Ultra Synthetic filter again on my next OCI as well. Hopefully I can get a oil filter opener and send off a UOA after I move to see how well the oils and filters are doing.

Another thing a lot of people don't really talk about is "age" as most always talk about mileage. Due to the distance I normally drive I usually do two OCI's a year with each running around 5K with a lot of short distance driving since I stick around the base a lot and don't need to go anywhere else as often. Usually I put in around 25-35 miles per day with typical stop and go traffic due to lights a roughly a couple 5 minutes drives on the highway. I want to believe these Fram filters are holding up regardless of mileage and age but it's still nice to see people reporting good news about these filters. I'm no expert but I'll try and get some results in my next OCI's.
