Engine overfilled.

I think the design of the lower half and the geometry make more of an impact here than anything. Some cars have extremely roomy bottoms, where you could see that it could accommodate quite a lot of oil even after the high mark.

Let's also not forget there's a baffle quite a bit higher than the high mark in some cases designed specifically to prevent the oil from touching the crank, either by overfilling or cornering or something.

Whenever I get curious about how much overfilling is bad I usually find pictures or videos of the oil pan removal and eyeball the geometry.
 
Yep, my WRX calls for 5.4 quarts. Take a wild guess how much I put in. Yep, 5.5 quarts. I ain't tryin' to calculate out exactly 2/5ths of a quart!
