Although I am not an E36 fan, I do distinctly remember the automotive magazines regarded the E36 M3 as the ultimate driving machine for almost a decade, even after the E46 came out!

E36 was/still is very capable sport saloon, but yeah, E30 is fun-especially 320is that wasn't sold in NA (not counting M of curse). Friends 320 with 2.5 swap from 5er doesn't feel as nice- engine isn't as revving and feels heavy. Also it never feels like it has 190HP.
Nice e36/5 will be a great compromise- all the goodies from the latter cars and handling/lightness front the e30. Odd looks keep the prices down to. There's also a intake manifold mode (from 325) that will put the engine in standard power (190).
