I had to have my oil pump replaced due to a pause in oil pressure at a hot restart. When hot after a short shut off like when getting gas every now and then it would have a short few seconds delay of zero pressure. It would make me nervous, mechanic said it was okay and not worry but I don't want to buy a new motor for her. I put it off for a little time but then recently it would idle at about 8-10psi at about 400-450 rpms, not a mechanical but just the dash gauge, I know not the best. On a bright note the leak I thought was a rear main seal was the pan gasket and is fixed. Was able to get a few pics of it opened up before the pan went back on. She looked pretty good for 30yrs old. Able to get a view of the cam up inside, looked nice and clean with no varnish on the lobes. When the intake gasket was replaced at the beginning of the year the mechanic said it was super clean. Pressures now are 40-45psi when cold idle and at 55mph+ hot, idle when hot is 20-30psi. Replaced with standard M55 Melling, new staft w steel coupler, and pickup tube.

Looks really good for 30 years! How many miles, what did you use for oil, and what was your OCI? Thanks again for the interesting post.

I have had it for 3yrs, bought at 126k and now she has ~160k. I used QS HM blend 10w40, 5k oci's, pretty much since I got it and have used a bottle Schaeffer Moly EP for the past 2 years to help w leaks. I have ran a qt of HPL EC30 in it for ~5k last year with 3 pretty full oil filters so it cleaned up something.
Going forward going to run Delo XSP 15w40 for this summer and next, got a 2.5gal on clearance for $30. Winter I will probably use PP 10w30 as I have several jugs now from cheap rebates. I am needing to change the oil as they saved and reused the M1 5w40 that was in it when the oil pump was done. It had about 600 miles on it and we have put a couple hundred miles on it since the oil pump.
