I am wondering if anybody has one of these and what their thoughts are. The compact segment is ultra competitive and I find myself not being able to determine the best value. I would only be interested in a manual transmission car of any make. I want no part of Fords DCT, or Hondas CVT. The Corolla is terribly boring at least imo. I wont purchase a GM product because they still owe the taxpayers so they are out of the picture completely. The Mazda 3 seems to be a nice compromise of everything and more of a drivers car but I really dont know anything about Mazda and how reliable they are in the long term.

Can anybody school me on Mazdas in general?

I know it is not a Mazda 3, but bought a 2014 Mazda 2 and just turned over 1000 miles on it.

Previously had a Corolla I bought new, new Sentra, have a Vibe (basically same car as a Corolla), and I really like the Mazda.

I really like the handling and the build quality. Feels like a bigger and more expensive car. Very quiet 4 speed transmission in mine, and is very peppy for 100HP. Mine has a 1.5L VVT-i and doesn't weigh much.

My wife and I fight over who gets to take it work because it is that much fun to drive.

The doors close very solidly, the ride is extremely quiet, and all maintenance items on the engine are very easy to get to.

I didn't want a CVT either so I went with this Mazda. Go to Mazdas247.com which is like the BITOG of Mazdas.

ETA: Saw you are looking for a manual transmission. Have no experience with them in Mazdas.

Mazda 3 is more reliable than say a VW Jetta, but that does not say much. Mazda's do not have the long term durability of Toyota's and Honda's. So says my sister that has a 3.

The main problems were the Mazdaspeed models and their turbos. By all accounts the Skyactiv in the 3 and other models is a good performer that gets excellent mileage.

Nice machine. Good initial build quality, sporty, and comparatively economical to operate.

Mazda fills a market segment underserved by Honda, Toyota and Nissan imho. And their NA HQ is just down the road from here.

Funner to drive but more expensive to maintain. If you hate CVT test drive a corolla with the 4 speed. I have driven many Mazda 3's over the years and yes more sporty but I would not change my mind on getting a Corolla if I had to go back in time. 120k miles..and have only swapped 1 wheel bearing.

Mazda 3 is nice, so is the Dodge Dart in that compact class. My son has had one for 18k miles and a 18 months. Zero problems so far. Nice handling car with a roomy interior and trunk. He has the 2.0L w a 6 speed auto trans.

According to Consumer Reports, the Mazda3 is on their recomended list of vehicles to buy and the DART is on the list of vehicles to avoid.

You'd have to search for further information as to why? to both vehicles!

Have the 2010 Mazda 3 Touring 2 .0 L model with manual transmission since new. No problems. Great gas mileage.

At 45k, the Bridgestone Turanza 400 tires will be changed out this Fall.

If you believe Consumer Reports, they list Mazda up there with Honda & Toyota for reliability.

Also check truedelta.com for reliability information.

And no SYNC

Zoom-Zoom is my recommendation

I think the whole auto industry is catching up to HonYotaSanZdaBaru!

But, it isn't just about reliability, there is more to it including driving dynamics.

I put 100k miles on a 2006 Mazda6i with zero issues. I didn't even have to service the brakes over that time. Other than oil changes, all I did was buy one set of tires.

I have a 2012 Mazda3 (in signature) with 35k miles on it now. It has been completely trouble free and the 6spd MTX is the best I have ever driven. If you test drive one be prepared to buy one immediately after.

I had a kia forte rental ( previous gen) and it was the best compact I had driven by far. Worth checking out of you would tolerate a Korean vehicle and their nasty service dept (at least they are nasty up here on the coast - YMMV) The Forte' koup is a tasty vehicle for the money. I think you'll be paying well over 20K $$ for a mazda3 5-door with the better engine, and well under 20k for the Kia.

Go test drive one, I doubt you will be disappointed.

+1 on the Corolla being boring to drive (compared to Mazda). My Ex had 3 Corollas in the 5.5 years I knew her, all were designed to minimize the driving experience.

I can't speak specifically to the '3, but I love my '6. Long term reliability is yet to be seen w.r.t. the re-design, but I will say (IMO), the initial quality is definitely there. And the Skyactiv engines really do get wonderful mileage.

We have a 2013 Mazda 3 Skyactive that my wife drives. I love driving the car and we fight over who drives when we go somewhere together. 36,000 trouble free miles so far. Changing the oil is really easy too! Especially since I added the Fumoto valve. THe only thing I have found is that the tires need to be rotated at every OCI or the rears start getting loud, but that could just be the Bridgestone tires.

Having had 2 Corollas now; the reliability is for real, but they are anemic driving machines. My next vehicle purchase for a car will likely be a Mazda 3 when the 2.0 Skyactive 6 speed manuals get some mileage on them and I can find a nice used 1 owner for sale. Way funner to drive than a Corolla.

In general they're great if they're 2006 or newer, it's when they really went for it to break away from Ford a bit more.

I had a 2007 Mazda6 auto and loved it, only issue was bad gas cap caused the purge valve to work itself to death and that was a warranty repair (it was an ex-rental car I bought at 26k miles).

Had a mazdaspeed miata, different animal but tons of fun. Only smaller issues like exhaust gaskets and broken exhaust studs from factory turbo heat.

Now have a previously neglected 2007 Mazda3s (2.3L) MTX hatch and am slowly returning it to fully functional from neglected. Got a steal on it and have done all wheel bearings, shocks, belts and water pump, brakes... but most of that would've been avoidable by someone with a competent mechanic on a 135k mile car.

Girlfriend has a 2010 (smiley face) 2L auto and it's right at 65k and will be in need of shocks soon. Just did her first overdue transmission flush with Amsoil and as per usual that fluid is awesome, better shifting and overall smoothness improvements. She's bent two wheels since she doesn't know how to avoid potholes and lost a fight with a curb and a rear wheel. Nothing on the car bent and it aligned perfectly and wheel still balances perfectly with roadforce.

Her mom just got a 2014 3i GT auto and I've driven it a few times and it definitely has a sharper ride than most other small cars but somehow my girlfriend mistakes shock absorption for lack of road feel and likes her worn 2010 better. Once the new shocks are on (we'll be going stiffer since she likes my car on KW coilovers) we'll reassess. The automatic only uses the TQ under 5mph so when slowing and accelerating it's more akin to an automated manual and rev-matches downshifts wonderfully, even when manually shifting the automatic. Floor it and it drops gears very nicely and the torque of a skyactive engine is not to be understated, it's GREAT! Best part is after you floor it, the car holds the lower gear for a bit just in case you have unfinished business, a great feature for smaller-engined cars and as a lover of a manual transmission it gets great respect for that. It has the most caster of any FWD car and it feel VERY planted and stable for having such a linear steering feel, the more you turn the harder it gets with great self-centering.

If you don't end up with the Mazda, I'd bet money it'll most likely be because the ride was too harsh compared to other cars in the segment.

Good car from what I see. If I was shopping that segment I would look at the Mazda3, Civic (maybe even Si if you need a little more 'oomph'), and the Ford Focus hatchback with the manual trans. They seem to be the most enjoyable to drive around town.
