What motor oil would you use if it was 1970?

When I was a kid I used to love helping my dad change oil because my job was to shove that spout into the top of the can and hand it to him

Just one little problem. There was no Amsoil in 1970. Not till 1972. And Motul was the first synthetic available to the general consumer, and it came about in the 1960's.

My dad used Spectrum oil in his 1968 Chevy Biscayne because he worked at Sears.

When he got his 1971 Toyota Corolla, he used Castrol. During the 70s, 80s, and 90s, their advertisements said "For smaller, harder working engines" and that is why he chose it. Having a 4-speed manual transmission meant the engine would be revved high.

I guess I would have used Castrol as well.
