I picked up half a dozen of these and decided to cut one open to examine the internals and I'm surprised to see that it is wire backed old style. I cannot decode the dates on the can but it would be good to know when this was produced. It seems to be from 2023. I hope they are going back to the old design.

No, Fram is not going back to the old design. What you're seeing is that for some applications they never made the switch over to the new ultra media. There are still some Fram Ultra wire backed filters being made.
I actually have seen this filter in the new design I cut one a few months ago and it was the new design.

I've seen XG8As at Walmart with A3 batch codes that are still wire backed a week ago.

I hope at least 2024 batches of Titanium filters get their pink wire backed media again for spin-ons. Its been a game of shopping roulette at AAP.

It was made not too long ago. Thread below (sticky at top of this forum) shows how to read Fram and other brand date codes.

Titaniums seem to be going down the same non-wire backed media road as the Ultra, and probably never going back.

"A3 (meaning 2023) batch codes" cover a lot of dates - ie, Jan 1 to today. And not all XGs have went to non-wire backed media yet. Maybe Fram is keeping the wire backed media on their larger sized filters for some reason.

That only makes the product less interesting and not worthy of purchase, unless they update the packaging in the future to be clear on that.

> custom tooled a a custom baseplate inlet holes for a retail store exclusive
> silently revises product to no longer include the original advertised filtering media which is stated as one of the main selling points of the product on the packaging.

Pretty simple, my money can always go elsewhere.

Would feel pretty weird to be at the oil filter aisle to be that weirdo opening random oil filter boxes just to takes snapshots of batch codes and center tube holes. If I really cared to prove it I would have purchase a sample bring home to cut open and post a thread here. Someone here already did to prove it. I rather not get escorted out of the store by security.

As much as I would like it to think it, I don't believe First Brands is going back to using OG Ultra media on Ultras. It's true 23 production on topic filter and iirc seems the other smallest filter SAE application 4967 has still been showing up with OG media too. Whatever the reason here, as soon as OG media gone for specific individual applications left, that's it imo. Also notice Champ Labs influence louvered tube on the Ultra.

As for using 7317 on the current Sentra, I watch a yt video on oil filter change. Looked like it might be tight on clearance. I already made similar comment on another thread HERE that it would be first Nissan seen by me where longer 7317

I believe the date code in the OP's pic is 2023, 277th day, 3rd shift.

I have a XG7317 going back to middle of 2022 with holes and no sign of wire back. Seems odd that Fram would have more than a years WIP on hand, even for a filter that isn't all that common - and the short Nissan 6607 can is actually spec'd on a lot of vehicles, whether the longer one fits or not so I wouldn't call it uncommon.

I may need to go buy one next walmart trip.

I believe it has been posted here the XG16 and 8A remain wire backed, likely due to the depth of the pleats. I haven’t been able to confirm as Ultra boxes are sealed.

There may be other sizes that did not transition as well, an extremely small filter would seem a likely candidate.

At any rate, if true, First Brands has inadvertently verified the new Ultra is inferior to the original. Which is consistent with what has been seen in C&P here.
