I'm really interested in seeing a VOA/UOA of this oil.

My order is going in on Thursday. I'm going to dump the TSO a little early and see what the SSO's got.

What's a little early for the TSO

On the Amsoil website it gives a vw 503.00 rating. Is it possible this is a typo? The 503.00 rating is only good for 180hp and less engines for VAG/Audi. Shouldn't it say 503.01, I may be wrong, but I believe this is the current rating.

Here's what HQ said on this one:

In response to your inquiry, SSO meets VW 503.00, but does not meet the
minimum HT/HS requirements for VW 503.01 of 3.52 cP minumum. SSO has a
HT/HS of 3.2 cP. The VW 503.01 specification is specifically for the
RS4, and the TT or S3 with outputs of more than 180bhp. The VW 503.00
specification covers other Audi models, but does not cover the RS4, TT,
or S3 models. This is not a deficiency in SSO as it could have been
formulated to meet that parameter, however it was designed to be lower
in viscosity to enhance fuel economy. With the superb anti-wear
properties of SSO, this approach did not compromise engine protection in
anyway, yet delivers better overall efficiency.

What I read into this is that 1) Amsoil is, in a round about way, saying that SSO is so good, oh by the way fuel efficient, that it will work in the higher hp applications specing 503.01. Or 2) 503.01 is that important and still must only use oil with that spec.

The high tbn probably comes from an ester, one of the "ashless anti-wear additives", ???

I have no idea what Amsoil is saying, but in the US, all Audi gasoline engines require 502 oil, no matter what the horsepower rating of the engine.

Mine is at my house now...along with 12 quarts of ATF. So, barring any major problems this weekend, I will doing a few drain/fills and a fill of SSO

I am also not a vw/audi expert; but I believe Pablo the 502 is the one that is old and or extinct. I found reading online;VW 502.00
This oil can only be used in petrol engines and is recommended for those
which are subject to arduous conditions. It must not be used for any engines
with variable service intervals or any which are referred to under other
specifications.
Viscosity ratings: SAE 0w-40, 5w-40 or 10w-40

VW 503.00
This is a relatively new oil specification for petrol engines with variable
service intervals. It includes the AUDI S4, but not the RS4, or the TT and
S3 with outputs of more than 180bhp.
Viscosity rating: SAE 0w-30

VW 503.01
A new oil specification specifically for the RS4, and the TT and S3 with
outputs of more than 180bhp, Passat W8 and Phaeton W12.
Viscosity rating: 0w-30

I would believe that to find the best current oil it would have to have the 503.01 spec to have any chance in high hp offerings of today.

I don't think Amsoil is disagreeing with this. They are merely saying that SSO has an HTHS of 3.2 and does not technically qualify as a 503.01 which requires an HTHS > 3.51. (correct, mori?) They go on to say to say the wear requirements are there none the less.

Mobil 1 0w-40 is 503.01. It's mostly likely just the HT/HS issue. The 0w-40 stuff shears down so......it would probably do just fine but the correct oil for this would be the 5w-40 AFL.

Definitely an oil for over 10K OCI's. Anything under that I'd stick with the "lesser" synthetics. Curious of you fella's buying this....what are your intended OCI's?

Should do very well. I get excellent results on Mobil1 @10K OCI's in my Mercedes E320 2005. I'm eyeballing this stuff for that application. I would like to go "thinner" over the 40 weight Mobil1. From what I see this stuff would work nicely in that German thumper.....

This oil shouldn't improve wear over their other oils but does offer longer drain capability. It's essentially an upgraded version of TSO that uses ashless antiwear additives. If you don't run super long drains, go with the other synthetics.
